We can say that the most important part of Seon master Heoun(虛雲)’s Seon thought is Ganhwaseon(看話禪). Comparing the founder of Ganhwaseon, Daehae-Jonggo(大慧宗杲) with the follower, Gobong-Wonmyo(高峰原妙) in this paper, the writer considered Seon master Heoun(虛雲)’s Seon thought and the historical succession and transformation of Ganhwaseon thought at the same time. Mostly we can see the succession and transformation of Ganhwaseon thought on the three aspects, a conversation topic(話頭), a doubt on the topic(疑情) and a training method(行法). Continuously, Ganhwaseon is the main training method of Seon sect from the beginning of its appearance until now during the process of development. However the contents of Ganhwaseon brought new development and transformation as the era has advanced, and we can examine those changes from the followers of Ganhwaseon. Comparing with the thoughts of the previous Seon masters, Seon master Heoun(虛雲)’s Ganhwaseon thought has a distinctive character. This has relation with his qualification, environment of his period, and the tendency of scholars in those days. This study considers the way how contemporary men seek proper training methods for themselves through these problems and wants to offer the various probability to succeed the great traditions and develop them ceaselessly at the same time.

허운(虛雲)선사의 선사상에서 가장 중요한 부분은 간화선(看話禪)이라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 허운의 간화선 사상을 고찰함과 동시에 간화선 창시자 대혜종고(大慧宗杲)와선양자 고봉원묘(高峰原妙)를 비교하면서 간화선사상의 역사적인 계승과 변용에 대해 고찰하였다. 주로 화두와 의정 및 행법의 세 가지 측면에 대하여 그 사상적 계승과 변용이 나타남을 볼 수 있다. 간화선은 처음 출현할 때부터 지금까지 발전하는 과정 가운데 줄곧 선종의 주된 수행방법이었다. 하지만 그 내용은 시대의 발전에 따라 새로운 발전과 변용을 가져왔으며, 그러한 변화들은 간화선 계승자들을 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 허운선사의 간화선사상도그 이전의 선사들과 비교하여 독특한 특징을 지니고 있다고 하겠다. 이는 그 본인의근기와 그가 처한 시대적 환경 및 당시 학인들의 성향과 커다란 관련을 갖고 있다. 이러한 문제들에 대한 고찰을 통하여 현대인들은 어떻게 자기한테 적합한 수행방법을 모색하고, 또한 우수한 전통을 계승함과 동시에 면면히 발전시킬 수 있는가 하는 여러방면에 대하여 그 개연성을 제공하고자 한다.
