This paper focused on arguing the reason why Quintilian tried to establish the Classics of ancient Greece and Rome. For this, I have demonstrated some arguments in the following: First, politically to see, Quintilian’s establishing of the Classics was directly related to the prohibition of free speech in Forum Romanum where one could learn how to make a speech through imitating. Second, historically to see, it was linked with the fact that there were so many books in the 1 century AD that it raised already a question of what to be read in the classroom. This is evident in the fact that Quintilian used the term ordo, classifying the Classics. The term ordo itself is distinguished from pinax which refers to book list of a library. Third, educationally to see, Quintilian emphasized to imitate those who are deserved to look after through reading. Fourth, from the perspective of literature history, Quintilian’s establishing of the Classics was a kind of consequence which reflected discussions and issues on so-called “golden age.” This is to be testified in Dialogus de oratoribus of Tacitus. Finally, rhetorically to see, Quintilian’s Classics aimed at educating orator, not philosophus.

퀸틸리아누스의 고전 전범은 다음 여섯 가지 역사적인 현상을 배경 으로 형성되었다. 1)퀸틸리아누스가 고전 목록을 선정하게 된 역사적 배경은 포룸의 폐쇄 문제와 직결되어 있다. 2)퀸틸리아누스가 고전 목 록을 선정하게 된 데에는 현실적으로 읽을 책들이 많아졌다는 점도 중 요하다. 3)퀸틸리아누스가 고전을 선정하면서 ordo라는 표현을 사용한 이유는 도서관의 책들의 목록과는 구분하기 위해서라는 점도 지적해야 할 것이다. 4)퀸틸리아누스가 고전 혹은 전범(exemplar)이라는 용어 를 사용해서 모범이 될 만한 사람을 모방하라는 점을 강조한다는 것이 다. 5)퀸틸리아누스가 활동하던 시대가 이른바 “고전주의”라 볼 수 있 는 고전 시대에 접해 있다는 점도 중요하다. 6)퀸틸리아누스가 고전 전 범을 세우려는 결정적인 이유는, 그것이 말하기 교육과 직결된 문제였 기 때문이다.
