This article's intention is to organize the aspects of literary developments of the Jeju Uprising in the 2000s, find out their distinctive features, and explore their desirable direction to take in the future. The summery of discussed points is as follows: First, in the poetry field, one thing notable is that there has been a generational shift in the main body of creation and that there are not a few literary works successfully employing the Jeju language. Afterwards, it will be necessary to pay attention to the creation of poems internalizing the message of the Jeju Uprising and epics depicting the Jeju Uprising. Second, in novel, full-length novels are relatively noted. Also notable is that literary works contriving spatial dissemination(a diasporic approach) started to come out in earnest, and that literary works aggressively describing love and using revenge motif. Now it is time that young writers should write works satisfying readers in terms of history and popularity by exercising imaginative power Third, plays held back after a few came out in the early 2000s. It is thought to be related to the advent of movies about the Jeju Uprising. On the other hand, long fairy tales (juvenile novels), which had not existed before, were published and drew attention. And it is a desirable phenomenon in that this continually stimulates the struggle to remember the Jeju Uprising. All things considered, it is safe to say that Jeju Uprising literature in the 2000s is in the stage of a turning point and a variety of discussion." The April 3rd Jeju Uprising was officially redefined and April 3rd Movement faced a new phase. Literary aspects also started to develop a variety of new discourse as well as counter discourse.

기존 연구에서 4ㆍ3문학의 흐름은 ①‘비본질적ㆍ추상적 형상화 단계’(1948∼1978 년), ②‘비극성 드러내기 단계’(1978∼1987년), ③‘본격적 대항담론의 단계’(1987∼ 1999년), ④‘새로운 모색의 단계’(2000년∼ )로 정리된 바 있다. 이 글은 잠정적으로 만 논의된 네 번째 단계(2000년대)의 4․3문학의 전개 양상을 구체적으로 정리하고 그 특징적인 면모를 찾아보는 한편, 향후의 바람직한 방향을 모색하려는 의도에서 씌 어졌다. 논의한 내용은 다음과 같다. 시 분야에서는 창작 주체의 세대교체 현상과 더불어 시조 작품들의 약진이 주목되는 가운데, 제주어가 성공적으로 구사된 작품들이 적잖이 포착되었다. 앞으로는 4ㆍ3의 메시지를 내면화하는 시, 4ㆍ3장편서사시 등의 창작에 관심을 기울일 필요가 있다. 소설에서는 장편이 비교적 많이 나왔다. 공간의 확산(디아스포라적 접근)을 도모한 작품들이 본격적으로 출현하기 시작한 점, 연애의 서사와 복수 모티프가 적극 활용된 작품이 나온 점 등도 특징적인 면모다. 이제는 역사성과 대중성을 함께 만족시키는, 과 감한 상상력이 발휘된 작품이 젊은 작가들에 의해 씌어져야 할 시점이다. 희곡 분야는 2000년대 초입에 몇 편이 나온 이후 주춤해졌는데, 이는 4ㆍ3장편영 화의 출현과 관련이 있는 것으로 판단된다. 반면에 예전의 4ㆍ3문학에서는 찾아볼 수 없던 장편동화(소년소설)들이 연이어 출간됨으로써 눈길을 끌었는바, 이는 4․3의 지 속적인 기억투쟁을 도모한다는 의미에서도 바람직한 현상이다. 이렇게 볼 때 2000년대 4․3문학은 ‘전환기적 모색과 다양한 담론의 단계’ 정도로 명명할 수 있으리라고 본다. 4ㆍ3에 대한 공식역사가 재규정되고 4ㆍ3운동이 새로운 국면을 맞으면서 문학의 양상도 기존의 대항담론으로서의 의미만이 아니라 다양하고 변화된 담론의 전개로 나타났다는 것이다.
