In Korean theater history, dramas that depict the Korean war have tended to show strong anticommunism. More recently, dramatists have begun to see the relationship between North and South Korea from a different perspective than simply a hostile relationship. In particular, Kim Myung-hwa's plays, “Chimhyang” and “Naengmyeon: Chimhyangoejeon,” are representative works on the subject of the Korean War created since the 2000s, and they show aspects of reproduction different from those of the plays of the past. “Chimhyang,” performed in 2008, considers how the scars of the war that still remain in a village can be overcome and how their meanings can be shared in the community. It also shows how to convey the meaning of the war to descendants. In addition, in “Naengmyeon: Chimhyangoejeon,” performed in 2018, from a more active position of the generation that hasn't experienced the war, the problems of memories and experiences become connected in a broader category related to the Korean War. In this way, it tells the audience that all of us are involved in the war, and at the same time, searches for ways to share the pain. Because the Korean War can be a strange and distant problem for the present generation, the play is a valuable attempt at meeting a new historical demand in a changed environment, as well as a deeper reflection on the meanings of the Korean War. Futhermore these changes in Korean theater in the representation of war have many implications for new efforts and attempts to remember the past.

한국 연극사 안에서 이른바 ‘6.25’를 소재로 한 작품들은 반공의 프레임으로부터 못내 자유롭지 못했다. 그러나 남과 북의 관계를 적대적 대치의 관계가 아닌 다른 시선에서 조망하려고 한 노력이 전무했던 것만은 아니다. 특히 2000년대 이후 전대와 다른 시선에서 한국전쟁의 의미를 성찰하려는 노력이 등장하는데 김명화의 연극 「침향」과 「냉면-침향외전(沈香外傳)」은 그 대표적 사례라 할 것이다. 2008년에 공연된 「침향」은 한 마을 공동체에 여전히 남겨진 전쟁의 상흔이 어떻게 극복될 수 있는지, 또 비극적 역사의 의미를 공동체 내에서 어떻게 공유하며 전승할 수 있을지 고민하는 작품이다. 「침향」과의 연관성을 전제하여 2018년 발표한 「냉면-침향외전(沈香外傳)」은 이에 더 나아가 달라진 시대의 변화를 예민하게 감지한다. 즉 전쟁 미체험 세대의 입장에 보다 적극적으로 서서 한국전쟁의 문제를 바라보고자 한 것이다. 그리하여 이와 관련된 넓은 범주에서의 일상적 기억, 체험, 역사의 문제를 연결하기 위해 노력한다. 이러한 시도는 우리 모두 전쟁에 연루되었다는 진실을 알리는 동시에 그 기억을 분유하기 위한 하나의 방법으로 제시된다. 이를 통해 작가 김명화는 점차 망각되어 가는 한국전쟁의 의미를 깊이 있게 성찰하는 동시에 전쟁과 분단이라는 역사적 과제 앞에 놓인 시대의 임무를 환기하고자 하였다. 전쟁을 재현하는 데에 나타난 한국 연극계의 이러한 변화들은 앞으로 과거를 기억하려는 새로운 노력과 시도들에 많은 시사점을 남긴다 할 것이다.
