Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture 16-2, 121-147. Among various texts in Korean cultural education, the present study considers Korean literature about society and culture helps learners to understand about Korean society and culture as important material for cultural education. In order to examine the practical use of such literature texts, this study seeks to conduct a foundational study through a needs assessment for two groups, the learners and the instructors. The research participants are advanced Korean learners at a university-affiliated Korean language education institute and instructors teaching Korean language and literature. The stages of research include initial explanation and interview, questionnaire, review of the questionnaire, survey, and post-survey confirmation questioning. The results of the survey show different characteristics in the demands between the two groups. The instructor group used the literature texts by focusing on the understanding of Korean society and culture as well as developing the language abilities, the learner group showed a great interest in Korean society and culture but their desire was to learn Korean language and culture in a more entertaining method. Therefore, they preferred literature that were famous and popular rather than those that are highly valued for their literary history and content, and they also showed a higher response than the instructor group in the reconstruction of cultural texts as a learning technique. Based on such results of the needs assessment, the present study provides educational suggestions for the effective use of various literature texts as a textual material for education. 본 연구는 한국어 문화 교육을 하는 데 있어서 여러 가지 다양한 텍스 트 중 한국의 사회와 문화를 잘 보여주고 학습자들의 이해를 도울 수 있는 문학 작품을 문화 교육의 중요한 제재로 삼는다. 이러한 문학 텍 스트를 실질적으로 활용하는 방안을 고찰하기 위해 학습자와 교수자 두 집단을 상으로 요구 조사를 실시함으로써 기초 연구를 수행하고 자 한다. 연구 상자는 학 부설의 한국어 교육 기관에서 현재 한국 어를 배우고 있는 고급 수준의 학습자와 직접 현장에서 한국어와 한국 문학을 가르치고 있는 교수자를 그 상으로 한다. 연구는 사전 설명 및 면담, 설문지 작성, 설문지 검토, 설문 조사, 조사 후 확인 질문 순으 로 진행된다. 연구 상자인 외국인 학습자와 교수자 두 그룹 간의 요 구 사항은 각각 다른 특징을 나타냈다. 우선 한국 문학 작품을 배우거 나 문학 작품을 활용하여 가르치는 것에 한 필요성은 두 그룹 모두 느끼고 있었다. 그러나 한국의 사회와 문화에 한 이해를 높이고 언 어 능력을 향상시키는 데 중점을 두고 교육적으로 접근하는 교수자 그 룹과는 달리 학습자들은 한국의 사회와 문화에 해 높은 관심을 보이 고는 있지만 한국어와 한국문화를 좀 더 재미있는 방법으로 학습하고 자 하는 욕구가 높았다. 이에 따라 문학 작품도 문학사적으로 높이 평 가되는 작품보다는 유명하고 인기 있는 작품을 가장 많이 선호하으 며 문학 텍스트를 재구성하여 학습하는 방법에 해서도 교수자 그룹 보다 더 높은 호응을 보다. 이러한 요구 조사를 바탕으로 문학 작품 을 텍스트 자료 중 하나로 보고 다양한 문학 텍스트 활용 방안에 해 교육적으로 제언을 하고자 한다.
