The aim of this paper is to provide metonymic motivation for anaphoric relationships. In other words, this paper addresses the issue of metonymic anaphora, i.e. the selection of anaphoric pronoun whenever the antecedent is metonymic. Metonymy is one of the most fundamental cognitive processes which operates on all levels of language structure and use. Although previous analyses have attempted to account for the principles that govern metonymic anaphora, a systematic solution to the problem has not yet been provided. Our starting point is the basic assumption that the nature of the underlying mapping in a metonymic antecedent has an important role in determining the selection and behaviour of the adequate anaphoric device. I distinguish between single and double metonymic mappings. Also I put forward a general constraint on metonymic anaphora and principles. The interaction and tension between these principles governs the selection of the relevant.

이 논문의 목표는 조응 관계에 대한 환유적 동기를 제공하는 것이다. 즉, 선행사 가 환유일 때 조응소를 어떻게 선택하는가라는 환유적 조응의 논제를 다룬다. 환유 는 언어 구조와 용법의 모든 층위에서 작용하는 가장 근본적인 인지 과정 중 하나 이다. 이런 환유가 조응의 층위에서도 작동한다. 이전 연구에서는 환유적 조응을 지 배하는 원리들을 설명하려는 시도가 있었지만 이 문제에 대한 체계적인 해결책은 나오지 않았다. 환유적 선행사에서 기본적인 사상의 본질이 적절한 환유적 장치의 선택과 행동을 결정하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다는 것이 기본 가정이다. 이 논문에 서는 환유에 대한 이분법적 분류를 채택하는 루이스 데 멘도자의 환유 접근법을 채 택한다. 그는 환유를 단일 환유와 이중 환유를 구분하고, 이 두 가지 환유에서 조응 소의 사용을 지배하는 다양한 제약과 원리를 제안한다. 그리고 구체적인 실례에서 각 환유 유형에서 그런 제약들이 서로 다르게 작동한다는 것을 알 수 있다.
