The purpose of this study is to examine Lion Feuchtwanger's historical consciousness through his images of Spain, which needs to be further examined. It is true that the Spanish Images of Lion Feuchtwanger are an important element of his historical consciousness and artistic awareness, but so far there has been a lack of sufficient discussions regarding that. The historical consciousness of Lion Feuchtwanger, starting with the realization that he is a writer of the Third Reich, shows the violence of the state institutions, the religious trial, and the violence of the war in the name of Christianity. The author demonstrates social conflict and contradictions that resulted from the paralysis of collective reason, especially in the society of Toledo in the 12th century and Madrid in the 18th century. Feuchtwanger is reflecting on Germany's Third Reich, which was a daily state censorship. The author also criticizes the german society that justifies the war, which involves a coexistence of various religions and conflicts based on the fall of a Jewish family. Based on a sense of crisis to German society, the writer appeals that a Cosmopolitan society allows various cultural traditions through the power of human reason.

본 연구의 목적은 지금까지 다루어지지 않았던 리온 포이히트방어의 스페인 상을 통하여 그의 역사의식을 고찰해 보는 것이다. 포이히트방어의 스페인 상 은 그의 역사의식과 예술인식을 이루는 중요한 요소임에도 이에 대하여 아직까 지 충분한 논의가 거의 없었던 것이 사실이다. 포이히트방어의 역사의식은 독 일 제3제국기의 작가라는 현실인식에서 출발하여 국가 기관의 폭력과 종교재 판, 그리고 기독교의 기사도라는 이름으로 자행된 전쟁의 폭력성을 보여준다. 이 과정에서 작가는 스페인 역사의 다양한 시공간을 배경으로 특히 12세기 톨 레도와 18세기 마드리드 사회에서 나타났던 집단 이성의 마비라는 결과로 나타 난 사회적 갈등과 모순을 보여준다. 포이히트방어는 국가 검열이 일상이었던 독일 제 3 제국기를 반성하고 있다. 또한 작가는 한 유대인 가족의 몰락을 바탕으로 다양한 종교의 공존과 갈등을 내포한 스페인의 중세를 그려냄으로써 전쟁을 정당화한 독일 사회를 비판한다. 작가는 독일 사회에 대한 위기의식을 바탕으로 인간 이성의 힘을 통하여 다양 한 문화적 전통을 허용하는 코스모폴리탄 사회가 가능하다는 호소를 전달하고 있다.
