Michael Berg, the hero of Bernhard Schlink's novel Der Vorleser is the second generation of the Nazi Holocaust. The novel deals with Michael's story about his lover, Hanna Schmitz, whom he loved for a while in his childhood. In the novel consisting of three-parts, there are three scenes that compressively show Michael's attitude toward Hanna; first, a scene in the first part of the novel in which Michael first visited Hanna who helped him vomiting in the street; second, a scene in the second part of the novel, in which he met Hanna, who was in court as a Nazi war criminal; again, and a scene in the third part of the novel, in which he visited the prison where Hanna was imprisoned. In this article, Michael’s attitude was analyzed centering on these three scenes. Michael cannot forget Hanna. However, at the same time, he feels ashamed and guilty due to Hanna. In this article, the analysis indicates that the shape of Michael who is suffering between shame and a sense of guilt on the one hand and love on the other hand is a typical characteristic of the second generation of the Holocaust.

베른하르트 슐링크의 소설 『책 읽어주는 남자』의 주인공 미하엘 베 르크는 나치 홀로코스트 2세대이다. 소설은 어린 시절 잠시 사랑했던 연인 한나 슈미츠에 대한 미하엘의 이야기를 다루고 있다. 3부로 구성 된 소설에서 한나를 대하는 미하엘의 태도를 압축적으로 보여주는 세 개의 장면이 있다. 첫째, 소설의 1부에서 미하엘이 거리에서 구토를 하 던 자신을 도와준 한나를 처음으로 방문하는 장면, 둘째, 소설의 2부에 서 나치전범으로 법정에 선 한나와의 재회 장면, 그리고 셋째, 소설의 3부에서 한나가 수감된 교도소를 방문하는 장면 등이다. 본고에서는 이 세 장면을 중심으로 미하엘의 태도를 분석하였다. 미하엘은 한나를 잊 지 못한다. 그러나 그와 동시에 한나로 인해 수치심과 죄책감을 느낀다. 이 글에서는 한편으로는 사랑, 또 다른 한편으로는 수치심과 죄의 식 사이에서 고통을 당하는 미하엘의 모습이 홀로코스트 2세대의 전형 적인 특징임을 분석하였다.
