- The purpose of this paper is to survey and confirm the concept and fundamental difference of ambiguity & vagueness. Ambiguity means that an expression of a word or sentential structure has two meanings. So, ambiguity resembles a word with many meanings and a homonym. Vagueness doesn't have two meanings in an expression and it is not a clear linguistic expression in communicating each other. Because a speaker doesn't speak clearly, vagueness is appeared in a conversational situation. There are several fundamental difference between ambiguity and vagueness. Firstly, ambiguity and vagueness have influence on sentence interpretation in other ways. That is to say, ambiguity is appeared by word with many meanings, and vagueness is appeared by a homonym. Secondly, a word is able to express many different meanings with a coordinate conjunction in a sentence structure. If a sentence or word connect each other with a coordinate conjunction, it expresses vagueness. However, if a sentence or word doesn't connected each other with a coordinate conjunction, it expresses ambiguity. Thirdly, ambiguity is not able to have a crossed interpretation in a structure of anaphoric expressions like 'do, so, too'. However, vagueness is able to have a crossed interpretation in a structure of anaphoric expressions like 'do, so, too'. Ambiguity and vagueness is differ from each other, therefore we have to be careful in using them in a conversational situation.

- 이 논문은 중의성과 모호성에 대해서 일반적으로 유사하기는 하지만 동일하게 사용하는 사람들이 있어서 이 둘은 분명하게 다르다는 것을 제시하고 개념과 근본적인 차이점을 찾아보려고 하는 것이 목적이다. 중의성과 모호성을 구분하는 근본적인 차이점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중의성과 모호성은 서로 다른 방법으로 문장의 의미해석에 영 향을 줄 수 있다는 것이다. 즉, 중의성은 다의어에 의해서, 모호성은 단의어에 의해서 나타난다는 것이다. 둘째, 한 낱말의 여러 구별되는 의미를 기이성 없이 하나의 구문 속 에 등위접속 시킬 수 있는가의 여부에 관한 것을 들 수 있다. 셋째, ‘do so too’와 같은 조응적 표현을 가진 구문에서 교차해석의 가능성 여부에 의해서 구별해 볼 수 있다. 즉, 중의성은 교차해석이 불 가능하고, 모호성은 교차해석이 가능하다는 것이 중의성과 모호성이 근 본적인 차이이다. 결론적으로, 중의성과 모호성은 근본적으로 차이가 있기 때문에 적 절하게 사용해야 할 것이다.
