The purpose of this study is to consider creoles as the languages of substantial value with an independent grammar, not such a sub-variety of languages as dialects or non-standard dialects, and fully appreciate their status from the sociolinguistic perspective. The source of the thesis came mainly from Ethnologue(2015), An introduction to Sociolinguistics(Wardhaugh, 2002), Englishes round the World(Schneider, 2011) wherein the substantive status of creoles was grasped because the number of languages used varies from society to society and which language to use is decided by the arbitrary policy of languages. First of all, creoles that are still in use around the world have been studied by geographical, national, continental, and language-based criteria. The numerical distribution of creoles was examined according to the continent, and some follow-up researches were conducted to know and compare what kinds of creoles exist, how many they are, and what status they have within each of continents. Based upon the analysis of results, it has been also predicted how the status of creoles will be changed in the future within each of the countries. All languages ought to be equally and equivalently treated and preserved. Though creoles are used by a small number of people, they are important means to represent their identity and should be valued as genuine languages as one language should not necessarily reign over other languages. Wishing this thesis will make people have more interest and respect for the creoles, it is expected that the status of creoles representing the lives and culture of their users will be improved as the inherent languages of a society and their people in the coming future.

이 논문의 목적은 크리올어를 한 언어의 하위개념(sub-variety)인 사투리 또는 방언(non-standard dialect)으로 보는 것이 아니라 하 나의 독자적인 문법체계를 갖춘 언어로서의 충분한 가치를 가진 언어로 서 보며 그 지위는 사회언어학적 입장에서 충분히 인정되어야 한다는 것이다. 이 논문은 사회마다 사용되는 언어의 개수는 다르고 어느 언어를 사용할지 결정하는 요인은 그 언어 사용자들의 자의적인 언어정책에 의 하여 결정되기 때문에 그 안에서 실질적인 크리올어들의 지위를 파악해 보았다. 정치적, 사회적, 언어학적, 교육적 관점에서 볼 때, 나라마다 사회마 다 상황이 다르겠지만 이들 크리올어들은 해당 국가나 지역의 정체성 (identity)을 반영하는 쪽으로 결정되어 가는 추세이다. 또한 다양한 문화, 종교, 언어가 공존하는 다문화사회에서 크리올어가 가지고 있는 지위와 존재가치란 결코 덜 중요하거나 부차적인 문제가 아니며 동등하 고 평등하게 대우받아야 할 필요가 있다. 이 논문을 통해 크리올어에 대한 관심이 한층 더 높아지고 존경심이 강화되길 바라며, 한 사회와 민족의 고유의 언어로서 그들의 삶과 문 화에 대해 엿볼 수 있는 크리올어의 지위는 앞으로 나아질 거라 예상 한다.
