In Korea there are a lot of discussions regarding on the reformation of school system. The need for reformation of school system has been suggested to respond to development of knowledge based on society, fast growing society accompanied by globalization and information oriented society, and various educational demands. South Korea’s plan of reformation of school system has to consider several aspects, but South Korea also has to think about the importance of integration of school systems between South Korea and North Korea. Therefore, this study divides preceding plan of education integration between North and South into three parts which include types of integration of political systems and scheme of educational integration by stages, plan for ideal education integration surpassing political systems, and educational integration intended for national integration. And it looks into meanings of each integration. Also, by comparing and analyzing South and North Korea’s school systems into compulsory education policy, elementary and middle school education policy, and high school education policy, this research seeks direction of reformation of school systems in preparation of integration.

우리나라는 현재 학제 개편 논의가 한창이다. 학제 개편의 필요성은 최근 지식기반사회의 전개 와 정보화․세계화에 따른 미래사회의 급속한 변화에 적절하게 대응하고 국민들의 다양한 교육 적 요구를 반영해야 한다는 측면에서 적극적으로 제기되고 있다. 남한의 학제 개편 방안은 여러 가지 측면을 고려해야 하지만, 남북한의 학제 통합도 중요하게 고려해야 할 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 선행 남북한 교육통합 방안을 (1) 체제통합의 유형과 단계에 따른 교육통합 안, (2) 체제를 넘어선 이상적 교육통합안, (3) 민족통합을 위한 교육통합안으로 구분하여 살펴보 고 각각 학제 통합의 의미를 살펴보았다. 또한 남북한 학제를 의무교육정책, 초중등교육제도, 고 등교육제도로 비교 분석함으로서 통합에 대비한 학제 개편의 방향을 모색하였다.
