The present study has investigated Mishima Yukio’s Shizumeru Taki(The Sunken Waterfall, 1955), mainly focusing on love between men and women which has not been addressed seriously before in Mishima Yukio’s Literature research. By regarding Shizumeru Taki as a middlebrow novel, we examined what meaning do the Middlebrow novels, which are related to common themes of men and women's love or social customs, offer for Mishima’s literature. “Love”, which is the main theme of “Shizumeru Taki”, in particular the relationship between married men and women is regarded as a Middlebrow novelistic theme, and academic interest concerning these Middlebrow novel workpieces in the Mishima literature research was not common. However, attention should be paid to the fact that this work was published in “Chuokoron”, a comprehensive magazine In the first place it is necessary to consider what kind of intention was used for the media called a magazine. As a writer who used a variety of magazine media, Mishima promoted the popularization of literature; specifically, it can be said that the importance of female readers was recognized. Moreover, it can be pointed out that it continued to activate the creative consciousness of women, such as letting female characters have a great significance in hiswork. Therefore, considering the situation of publication of the magazine at the time of writing of this work, I would like to focus on the position and characteristics of the middlebrow novels in Mishima’s literary work .
