The purpose of this study was to explore educational teaching directions for elementary competition P.E. classes in the Korean national 2015 revised physical education curriculum. A number of elementary school students' topic writing materials, open-ended questions and interviews with three in-service and four pre-service teachers were collected. Data were analyzed inductively. Findings revealed with two main domains as follows. First, we highlighted common aspect between the perception of students and that of teachers about elementary P.E. competition classes in terms of pros and cons. Differences in those perceptions were investigated through the teachers’ perspectives who regard competition as means of education. Additionally, the educational teaching directions were presented with four themes by comparing with perceptions of teachers and students and analyzing national P.E. curriculum documents. First, 'competition' should be regarded as something to overcome rather than avoid. Second, in designing competition activities, 'games' should be utilized more than 'sports' with a deep consideration for student’s developmental levels. Third, competition classes should be considered as a learning place where students can develop their character. Fourth, competition activities should take a ‘win-win’ approach rather than ‘zero-sum’ approach in order to provide students with fair opportunities. Based on these findings, this study proposed the importance of teachers’ role for educational approach in the competition classes.

본 연구의 목적은 2015 개정 체육과 교육과정 체제에서 초등 경쟁 영역 수업의 교육적 지도 방향을 모색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 초등학생 다수의 경쟁 관련 주제글쓰기 자료, 현직교사 3명의 개방형 설문 및 심층면담 자료, 교육 대학교 예비교사 4명의 심층면담 자료를 수집하고 귀납적 범주분석의 절차에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 크게 두 가지 범주로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 먼저 초등 경쟁 영역 수업에 대한 학생과 교사의 인식을 살펴보았다. 그 중 공 통적인 면을 빛과 그림자의 측면에서 조망하고, 인식의 차이는 경쟁을 교육의 수단으로 여기고 있는 교사의 관점에 서 살펴보았다. 경쟁에 대한 학생 및 교사의 인식과 교육과정 문서, 선행연구 분석 결과를 토대로 경쟁 영역 지도의 교육적 지향은 크게 네 가지 주제로 제시하였다. 첫째, ‘경쟁’은 피하기보다는 맞서서 극복해야 할 대상으로 여겨야 한다. 둘째, 초등 체육에서는 학생의 발달 단계를 고려하여 스포츠보다는 게임의 변형을 통한 접근을 지향해야 한 다. 셋째, 경쟁 영역의 수업은 그 본질적 특성으로 말미암아 학생들이 마음을 수양할 수 있는 배움터로 활용할 수 있다. 넷째, 경쟁 영역의 수업 구조는 제로섬(zero-sum)보다는 윈윈(win-win)의 접근을 취하여 학생들에게 공평한 기회 제공을 도모해야 한다. 이들 주제에 따른 논의는 ‘경쟁 활동의 어려움을 교육학적으로 접근하기 위한 네 가지 규범적 논제’(Aggerholm 등, 2018)를 보완적으로 활용하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 경쟁 영역 수업의 교육적 지향을 위한 교사 역할의 중요성을 제안하였다.
