Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory is a classic representing medieval prose literature, consisting of King Arthur's life story, adventures and love stories of numerous knights, and Christian topics including exploration of the Holy Grail. In the fall of 1892, Aubrey Beardsley who had been still unknown came to take charge of production of all illustrations, including the cover of this book, and this work lasted for a year. Le Morte d'Arthur is a representative work produced in the early days of Beardsley activities, showing the style of his illustrations and the process of its formation and transformation. This article shows how Beardsley interprets literary text of medieval times Le Morte d'Arthur as an illustrator and how he shapes its image through his own personality, mainly in terms of form and style. It is discussed from three perspectives, such as the layout and composition; character expression and image; space expression and costumes of figure. Le Morte d'Arthur comprehensively reflects editorial design of the Kelmscott Press based on the medieval tradition, character expression in the Edward Burne-Jones paintings, Japanese arts including Ukiyo-e and influences of arts in various cultural areas of various times exerted on Beardsley. Based on those factors, he has successfully shaped the medieval Gothic world of unique and individual modern images.

토마스 말로리의『아서왕의 죽음』은 중세 산문 문 학을 대표하는 고전으로서 아서왕 일대기와 수많은 기사들의 모험과 사랑 이야기, 그리고 성배 탐색이라 는 기독교적 주제 등으로 구성되어 있다. 1892년 가 을, 아직 무명이던 오브리 비어즐리는 이 책의 표지 를 포함해 본문의 모든 삽화들의 제작을 맡게 되었고, 이 작업은 일 년 남짓 계속되었다.『아서왕의 죽음』 은 비어즐리 활동 초기의 대표작으로서 그의 일러스 트레이션의 양식적 특징과 그것이 형성되고 변화되어 가는 과정을 잘 보여준다. 본고에서는 비어즐리가『아서왕의 죽음』이라는 중 세시대의 문학 텍스트를 삽화가로서 어떻게 해석하고 자신의 개성을 통해 조형화하고 있는지를 주로 형식 및 양식적인 면에서 조명하되, 레이아웃과 화면 구성, 인물의 표현 및 이미지, 그리고 공간표현과 인물의 복식이라는 세 가지 관점에서 논의하였다. 『아서왕의 죽음』에는 중세적 전통에 기초한 켐스 콧 프레스의 편집디자인, 에드워드 번존스 회화에서 의 인물표현, 우키요에를 비롯한 일본 미술, 그리고 그 외의 여러 시대 여러 문화권의 미술로부터 비어즐 리가 받은 영향들이 복합적으로 반영되어 있는데, 그 는 이를 종합하여 독특하고 개성적인 이미지의 중세 고딕 세계를 성공적으로 그려내었다.
