This paper investigates factors for maintaining Chosŏnjok (ethnic Korean) identity in China. It describes the historical development and settlement of Chosŏnjok in China, and how their identity has been affected by the political change. Then, through interviewing and using survey data from most of the Chosŏnjok university students in Yanbian in China, the project investigates how the maintenance of Korean language, the Chosŏnjok’s exposure to Korean popular culture and mass media, encounters within their community, their education systems, as well as contact with other people from the Korean peninsula affects their identity in China. The results show that the size of the Chosŏnjok community, maintenance of Korean language, exposure to Korean popular culture (such as TV drama) are the factors influencing their identity.

이 논문은 중국거주 조선족들의 정체성 형성에 미치는 요인들을 연구한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 조선족의 역사적 전개 과정과 중국내 정착사항을 알아보고 중국내의 정치적인 변화가 어떻게 조선족 정체성에 영향을 주었는지를 살펴본다. 연구 자료 수집을 위해서는 연변 조선족 대학생들을 대상으로 인터뷰와 설문조사를 실시하였 으며 연구초점은 한국어 유지와 한국 대중문화와 메스미디어에 노출되는 것, 조선족 사회에서 조선족과의 교류, 그리고 조선족 민족 교육과 한국인들을 접촉하는 것 등이 이들의 정체성 형성에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 연구한 것이다. 결과는 조선족이 거주하는 지역에 조선족 사회의 크기, 한국어의 유지 수준, 대중문화에 노출되는 것 등이 조선족 정체성 형성에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
