European Union (EU) is the major export destination for ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries while the United States of America (USA) is the largest trade partner of EU. The export structures from ASEAN to EU is similar to the export structures from USA to the same destination. This research aims at examining the effects from exports of USA on exports of ASEAN to EU market. We examine impacts by employing both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The displacement effect on exports of ASEAN is examined by estimating the gravity model. The degree of export threat is also investigated by calculating the rivalry threat index (RTI). According to the empirical results, the displacement effects are detected in 21 out of 26 major industries of ASEAN. The displacement effect is detected notably in machinery and transport equipment (SITC7) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (SITC8). The findings from calculation of degree of export threat support the results of regression estimation. Our empirical analysis provides the significant policy implications to ASEAN countries that ASEAN may encounter with the fiercer threat on their exports against USA to EU market after the EU-USA FTA agreement comes into force in the near future. ASEAN needs to increase the level of competitiveness of its industries to compete with USA products in EU market, especially in 21 industries where the displacement effects are found.

미국이 EU의 가장 큰 무역파트너인 반면에, EU는 아세안 국가들에게 주요한 수 출 목적지이다. 아세안에서 EU로의 수출구조는 미국에서 EU로의 수출 구조와 비슷 하다. 미국의 수출이 아세안에서 EU 시장으로의 수출에 미치는 영향을 조사하는 데 목적을 둔다. 그 영향을 질적 및 양적 분석을 통해 조사한다. 아세안 수출의 대체효과 는 중력모형을 추정하여 조사한다. 수출위협의 정도도 경쟁위협지수를 계산하여 조 사한다. 실증적 결과에 따르면, 대체효과는 아세안의 26개 주요 산업 중 21개에서 발견된다. 대체효과는 특히 기계 및 운송 장비(SITC7) 및 기타 제조 제품(SITC8)에 서 나타난다. 수출 위협 정도의 계산에서 얻은 결과들은 회귀 추정의 결과를 뒷받침 한다. 실증적 분석은 아세안 국가들에게 가까운 미래에 EU-미국 FTA 협정이 발효된 이후에, 아세안이 미국에 맞서 EU 시장에 대한 그들의 수출에 더 강력한 위협을 마주할 수 있다는 중요한 정책적 함의를 제공한다. 아세안은 EU 시장에서 미국 상품 들과 경쟁할 그들의 산업, 특히 대체효과가 발견되는 21개 산업에서의 경쟁수준을 향상시킬 필요가 있다.
