- Christian minorities in the Middle East have been making efforts to explore measures to support their co-existence with neighbouring populations. However, the identity and future survival of these Christians are now threatened by new forces, such as revivalist religions, anti-government protests, and state-abetted violation. Since the Syrian uprising, which started in March 2011, the unity of Syrians has been undermined, and the areas of commonality between the privileged and ordinary citizens have become too small to sustain the national community. Consequently, Syrians become divided, and many pursue a group-differentiated identity. Cultural and religious identities may undergo change, due to the degradation of economic, political and social conditions. This paper discusses Syrian/Syriac Orthodox Christians’ quest for survival in Syria, and the changes in their political identity under the condition of the Syrian Civil War. These Christians are involved in an ambitious project, aimed at transforming the concept of their territory and homeland.

- 중동에서는 소수파 기독교인들은 이교도들과 공존하기 위해서 노력해 왔다. 그렇 지만 시리아에서는 이슬람교 원리주의자들뿐만 아니라 반정부 및 정부지지파 모두 가 과격한 무력투쟁으로 향해 가고 있으므로 기독교인들의 생존이 협박 당하고 있다. 시리아에서는 일반 시민들과 특권계급의 차이가 점점 확대되고 있다. 그 결과 국민들 이 작은 집단으로 분열, 무력투쟁으로 되풀이되는 내전이 2011년3월부터 계속되고 있어 국민국가를 유지하는 것이 곤란한 상황이다. 시리아의 예는 경제적․정치적․ 사회적 상황의 악화가 시민들의 문화적․종교적인 정체성을 변화시키고 있다는 것 을 시사한다. 본고에서는 시리아 정교회교인들 (Suriyan)이 시리아 내전중에 정치적 정체성을 변화시키는 것에 의해 시리아에서의 생존 가능성을 어떻게 추구하고 있는 가를 고찰하고자 한다. 이 기독교인들은 정치적 정체성을 재구축하기 위해서 그들의 민족성의 개념을 변화시키려고 하고 있다.
