With its focus on August Wilson's play󰡔Radio Golf󰡕, this paper examines how important it is to keep and remember one's heritage and history as an African American in establishing one's identity. Harmond, the protagonist of this play, is a well-educated middle-class African American and differs from ordinary lower-class African Americans in terms of socio-economic status. Seeking to gain social success, Harmond plans to redevelop the Hill District which has long been resided by African Americans but, he confronts a difficult situation. However, this difficulty functions as a catalyst for his recognition of history and establishment of his identity. Harmond comes to realize that redeveloping the Hill District is an act of denying his past and he totally modifies his redevelopment plan. Although he feels that social success and keeping his heritage are not compatible, he finally gets to know what is more valuable to his identity as an African American.

이 논문은 어거스트 윌슨의 마지막 작품인 『라디오 골프(Radio Golf)』를 중심으 로 아프리카계 미국인으로서 자신의 뿌리인 유산과 역사를 기억하는 것이 정체성 확립에 있어서 얼마나 중요한지를 다루고 있다. 이 작품의 주인공인 하몬드는 교육을 잘 받은 중류층 인물로서 보통의 하류층 아프리카계 미국인들과는 사회경제적인 위 치에 있어 상당한 차이를 보인다. 사회적인 성공을 꿈꾸던 그는 아프리카계 미국인들 이 오래 전부터 살아온 힐 지역을 전면적으로 재개발하려고 하는데, 그의 이런 계획 은 난관에 봉착한다. 하지만, 이 난관은 그의 역사인식과 정체성 확립에 촉매제로 작용한다. 하몬드는 힐 지역을 개발하는 것은 자신의 과거를 부정하는 것이라는 인식 을 하면서 재개발 계획을 전면 수정한다. 비록 사회적인 성공과 유산을 지키는 것은 양립될 수 없다고 느끼지만, 하몬드는 자신의 아프리카계 미국인으로서의 정체성에 있어서 무엇이 더 가치 있는 일인지를 마침내 알게 된다.
