This dissertation deals with the miserable life of the main character “Mongshil” in 『Sister Mongshil』, based on the impoverished life by war and violence against women during that time. Remarried mother, sick father, step-mother who died right after giving a birth to a younger brother, her half brother, “Nannam”, and her younger brother and sister, “Young Deuk” and “Youngsoon” all give her pain. But Mongshil accepts her life challenges. Her social circumstances force Mongshil to sacrifice herself and put up with all the suffering. From female perspectives, the social convention during her life time is another violence. Her responsibility for taking care of her family is not her motivation but social expectations forced her to take on the whole responsibility. Even her father’s physical violence against her mother is accepted as women’s destiny in this story. We can figure out how deeply the patriarchal family system is rooted in the society of that time. We need to consider the unfair social structure of that time in which women were treated unfairly and their independence and individuality were ignored, only requiring women to be patient and submissive. This conventional social perception can have negative effects on children’s sexual identity who read this kind of fairy tales. In particular, women and younger children’s exposure to violence and their isolation from social, institutional power is no longer a personal issue. This must be regarded as a social problem. To resolve social compulsion and violence against women, social awareness about justifying social, political, and legal fairness should be needed.

본 논의는 『몽실 언니』의 주인공인 ‘몽실’을 중심으로, 전쟁기의 빈곤과 여성에 대한 폭력에 집중하여 고찰하였다. 재혼한 친어머니, 병든 아버지, 병약한 몸 때문에 동생 난남을 낳자마자 세상을 떠난 새어머니, 난남, 친어머니가 낳은 동생인 영득과 영순이까지 주위 인물들은 모두 몽실에게 고통을 안겨준다. 그러나 몽실은 이 혹독한 현실을 묵묵히 받아들인다. 인내와 희생적 삶을 강요하는 사회구조, 가부장제는 여성 주의 관점에서 보면 폭력이다. 즉 어린 몽실이 가사 일에 육아까지 맡으면서 온갖 고생을 하는 것을 인간 승리가 아니라 아동착취, 여자 어린이에 대한 폭력으로 보는 것이다. 아버지가 어머니와 몽실에게 신체적 폭력을 행하는데도 그녀들은 그것을 운명으로 받아들이고 있다. 이 점은 그녀들에게 가부장적 사고가 얼마나 뿌리 깊이 박혀있는지 알 수 있게 한다. 한편, 󰡔몽실 언니󰡕가 제시하고 있는 여성 인물들은 동화를 읽는 어린이들의 성정 체성 형성에 문제가 될 여지가 많다. 특히 어린이나 여성이 폭력에 노출되고 권력과 제도로부터 소외되거나 배제되어 있다면 그것은 이미 개인적인 일이 아니라 사회문 제이다. 여성에 대한 강제나 폭력의 문제는 사회적·정치적·법적 정당화를 통한 사회 전체의 의식변화가 절실하다.
