Nearly all the poems that Christina Rossetti had written up to 1858 had been concerned with her own emotions, and yet many of them reveal how ardently she longed for a refuge from herself, until she wished that she were nothing at all in all the world. The escape of the mystic into a state of ecstasy that implies the annihilation of self and ingression into the Divine Shadow was with held from her. But only once, in "Goblin Market", does she allow herself to enter for more than a brief moment the enchanted country of which she was free. Here she lets her fancy room, intrammelled by allegory or symbolism. "Goblin Market" is a reveal of the senses; the swart-headed mulberries, bright-fire-like barbaerries, bloom-down-cheeked peaches, plump unpecked cherries, mellons icy-cold, appeal to sight and touch and taste. The gratesgue goblins, with their antics and grimaces, are described in lines that hop and tumble, fly and run and leap. The poem has all the exact detail that children demand in a story that depends in the willing suspension of disbelief.

크리스티나 로제티는 프리-라파엘리츠파에 속하는 시인이며 그때가 빅토리아조 후반기에 이르는 지성의 시대이다. 경제적으로 부유한 사회가 겪어야 하는 정신적 인 정화작업의 시대이다. 그녀의 오빠와 동생은 그 시대의 예술계를 대표한다고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 뛰어났다. 크리스티나는 오빠들처럼 학교교육을 받지 못했 지만 어머니의 영향아래 많은 독서의 힘과 그녀의 신앙의 힘이 시속에 녹아 들어 있고 타고난 시인의 재능이 고블린 마켓(Goblin Market)이란 장시 속에 드러난다. 빅토리아조 시대(황금만능시대)의 상술과 시장논리, 도깨비 같은 남자들의 유혹, 처녀들을 꼬여 내는 외침들이 그 시대를 말해주고 있다. 크리스티나는 적어도 이브의 유혹사건을 알고 있었기 때문에, 유혹을 극복해내 는 모습들이 시속에 잘 묘사되어 있다.
