Tropes of traveling and moving in Yeats’s prose offer a way into excavating the interactions between Yeats’s cultural projects and new technologies of communication and transportation during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Yeats’s thinking about modernity has typically been understood in terms of a Romantic rejection of empiricism, realism, and materialism. Scrutiny of his occult cultural nationalism suggests a more ambivalent relationship with technologies of communication and transportation as Yeats searched for new modes of creative inspiration and techniques with which to trigger a spiritual Renaissance in Ireland. Yeats took a skeptical approach to others’ claims of spiritualism throughout his explorations of occult phenomena, drew creative energy from an itinerant lifestyle which relied on modern transportation, and late in life turned eagerly to the new technology of radio broadcasting.
