The works of Dalsu Kim can be characterized with three keywords: ‘the history of Korean Japanese life,’ ‘the history of socialists’ struggle’ and ‘ancient history.’ First of all, ‘the history of Korean Japanese life’ is found in Kim Dalsu’s early works; he wrote about the Japanese colonial period as well as Korean Japanese who worked hard for their life as they were discriminated in various forms in Japan. ‘The history of socialists’ struggle’ can be found in his full-length novels published after The City of Descendants(後裔の街). His works during this period were filled with overwhelming passion, enthusiasm and a sense of duty with the belief that ‘socialist reform’ was the right path for Korean, showing the color of ‘engagement literature.’ However, due to the constant conflicts with Jochongnyeon(朝鮮総連), the pro- Pyeongyang Federation of Korean Resident in Japan, he had not written books about ‘the history of socialists’ struggle’ at all since Taebaek sanmaek(太白山脈;The Taebaek Mountains) was published in 1969. His research on ancient history started in the 1970s with his book series, ‘Korean Culture in Japan(日本の中の朝鮮文化).’ He worked hard on the 12-volume series, walking around every nook and cranny of Japan and writing down the journey, which was the lifework of Dalsu Kim himself. His research on ancient history seems to provide fertile ground for the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Islands to seek reconciliation beyond his personal reconciliation. He had to ‘convert’ from nationalism to socialism, and again to nihilism, and his two ‘conversions’ were a symbol of sorrows, hardships and contradic tion that Korean residents in Japan faced. His life journey provides an opportunity for shedding new light on the meaning of Korean Japanese in the 70thyear of independence, which coincides with the effort to spread the project for ‘historical reconciliation between Korea and Japan.’

김달수의 작품세계는 ‘재일동포생활사’ ‘사회주의자투쟁사’ ‘고대사’라는 세 개의 키워드로 구분된다. 우선 ‘재일동포생활사’의 흐름은 김달수 초기의 작품으로 식민지시대를 포함하여 재일동포가 다양한 차별을 받으면서 자신의 삶을 위해 열심히 살아가는 모습을 그린 시기이다. 다음의 ‘사회주의자투쟁사’의 흐름은 󰡔후예의 거리(後裔の街)󰡕 이후의 장편에서 넘치는 정열과 의욕 그리고 사명감을 가지고 조선민족의 바른 진로라고 믿은 ‘사회주의개혁’의 실현을 위해 ‘참여문학’이라는 색채를 띤 시기였다. 이후 일관되게 민족조직인 조선총련(朝鮮総連)과의 알력이 계속된 탓으로 1969년의 󰡔태백산맥(太白山脈)󰡕 이후에는 ‘사회주의자투쟁사’에 속하는 작품은 일체 쓰지 않게 된다. 김달수의 고대사연구는 1970년대부터 시작하는 ‘일본 속의 조선 문화(日本の中の朝鮮文化)’ 시리즈인데 이는 일본전국을 방방곡곡까지 걸어 다니며 기록하는 정성스런 작업을 거쳐 12권의 책으로 집필한 김달수의 라이프워크였다. 김달수의 고대사연구는 김달수 개인의 화해를 넘어, 한반도와 일본열도 간의 화해를 모색할 수 있는 토양을 마련해 준 것은 아닐까. 민족주의자에서 사회주의자로 또 다시 허무주의자로 ‘전향’하지 않을 수 없었던 김달수의 두 차례의 ‘전향’은 민족적 비애와 고난 그리고 모순의 상징이었다. 김달수의 인생 역정은 해방 70년의 재일의 의미를 다시금 재조명할 수 있다는 점에서 ‘한일 역사화해’의 모색에 부합할 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
