The purpose of this paper is to acquire research data that can identify the aspect and meaning of the modern ‘A Wenny Old Man(Hokburi Yeonggam)’ narrative. To accomplish this purpose, I examined nine texts of ‘A Wenny Old Man’ in the ‘Investigation Report of Chosun Legends and Fairy Tales’ conducted by the Chosun Government-General in 1913. Based on the narrative composition and contents of these texts, I examined the important motifs and narrative meaning, and based on their material values, presented a data base that can identify the identity of modern ‘A Wenny Old Man’ stories. In the early 1910s, the ‘A Wenny Old Man’ texts of the ‘Investigation Report of Chosun Legends and Fairy Tales’ showed a wide variety of narrative patterns. Therefore, in our reality where the legend and fairy tales materialized in the modern period are not enough, it will be very important to find out these new materials and expand and deepen the discussions using them. In this paper, I focused on the data of this report focusing on the modern ‘A Wenny Old Man’ stories. Through this, I aimed to contribute to increase the possibility of these texts as much as possible. These texts have identified noticeable motif differences in each of the characters, backgrounds, and events. There was a story that the main character, Hokburi, did not sing ‘song’ and whistled, or the temporal background was ‘night’ rather than ‘daytime’, and the spatial background was not ‘mountain’ but ‘road.’ In addition, it was possible to add ‘mutant goblin type’ and ‘mutant Jang Seung type’ to the type classification of the ‘A Wenny Old Man’ stories which is divided into ‘goblin type’ and ‘Jang Seung type.’ In addition, there was a ‘bestowal’ motif, in which the ‘transaction’ of buying and selling a bump and a buggy are identified as the key motifs of the story, and the bump is given free of charge. Also, I can see that there was a story of a ‘heft’ motif that takes out a hump. Until now, we have known the story of ‘Jang Seung type,’ which is the earliest period of ‘A Wenny Old Man’ stories, n the early period of ‘Anthology of Korean Fairy Tales’(1924) by Chosun Government-General. However, the fact that the typical ‘Jang Seung type’ narrative has been confirmed as the data of the preceding period is also significant. The textual pattern of the ‘A Wenny Old Man’ stories contained in the ‘Investigation Report of Chosun Legends and Fairy Tales’ is judged as a material value that will contribute to clarifying the identity of the modern ‘A Wenny Old Man’ stories. Especially, this fact is expected to be a great implication in the discussions on the process of the formation of the ‘A Wenny Old Man’ fairy tales.

본고는 근대 ‘혹부리영감’ 서사의 존재 양상과 의미를 규명할 수 있는 연 구 자료의 확보를 위하여 1913년 조선총독부가 실시한 전국적인 조선 전 설・동화 조사 보고서에 수록되어 있는 9편의 혹부리영감 텍스트를 자료적 으로 고찰하였다. 이들 텍스트의 서사 구성과 내용을 바탕으로 중요 화소와 서사적 의미를 살펴보았으며, 이들의 자료적 가치를 활용하여 근대 혹부리 영감 이야기의 정체성을 규명할 수 있는 자료적 기반을 제시하였다. 1910년 대 초반의 조선 민간에서 수집된 조선 전설・동화 조사 보고서의 혹부리영 감 텍스트들은 매우 다양한 서사 양상을 보여주고 있기 때문에 근대 시기에 구현된 전설・동화 자료가 넉넉하지 않은 우리의 현실에서 이러한 새 자료 의 발굴과 이를 활용한 논의의 확장 및 심화는 매우 긴요한 일이 될 것이다. 본고는 이 보고서 자료를 중심으로 하여 근대 혹부리영감 이야기에 집중된 자료적 고찰로써 이들 텍스트의 자료로서의 가능성을 가능한 한 높이는 데 기여하고자 하였다. 이 텍스트들은 인물・배경・사건의 각 내용에서 주목 할 만한 화소의 차이들을 보여주고 있었다. 주동인물인 혹부리가 ‘노래’를 부르지 않고 ‘휘파람’을 불거나, 시간적 배경이 ‘밤’이 아니라 ‘낮’이 되거 나, 공간적 배경이 ‘산’이 아니라 ‘길’이 되는 이야기가 확인되었다. 또 기 존에 ‘도깨비형’ 및 ‘장승형’으로 대별되어 있는 혹부리영감 이야기의 유형 분류에 ‘변이도깨비형’ 및 ‘변이장승형’을 추가할 수 있고, 혹부리와 도깨 비가 서로 혹을 팔고 사는 ‘거래’가 이 이야기의 핵심 화소로 확인되는 가 운데 그 외에 혹을 무상으로 주고받는 ‘증여’ 화소와 도깨비가 혹을 빼앗아 가는 ‘탈취’ 화소의 이야기가 존재한다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 장승 형 혹부리영감 이야기인 조선총독부의 『조선동화집』에 수록된 「혹 떼이기, 혹 받기」보다 앞선 시기의 자료로서 전형적인 장승형 서사가 확인된 사실도 의미가 크다. 이와 같은 조선 전설・동화 조사 보고서에 수록되어 있는 혹 부리영감 서사의 텍스트 양상은 근대 혹부리영감 이야기의 정체성을 밝히 는 데 매우 유의미한 자료적 가치를 지닌 것으로 판단된다.
