Giorgio Agamben derives a concept of the potentiality meaning a ‘potential not to’ from ‘I prefer not to’ told by Bartleby, a hero of by Herman Melville. The potentiality refers to saying not that ‘I don’t want to’ but that ‘I want not to’. It is meant to show resistance to oppression of the sovereignty connected to the ‘modern-subject-capital’. Centered on such a potentiality of Bartleby, 21st century’s Korean young writers-Park Solmoe, Kim Sa-gwa, Han Yu-joo-make new attempts by deactivating the existing novels. In other words, they pursue overcoming limitations of the 20st century’s Korean literature by denying the reality through the impotentiality interrupting the existing ruling power(Park Sol-moe), promoting the better literature through repetition of failures(Kim Sagwa) and continuing incomplete writing through ‘suspension’ of completion(Han Yu-joo). They intend to maximize freedom and liberation of ‘open literature’ through indeterminacy, uncertainty and trans-boundaries. Such literature of the potentiality is similar to ‘dead letters’. The reason why is that they share a characteristic of not being delivered to an addressee but being written definitely. It is also reason why literature still does not die despite a scandal of the ‘death of literature’. Korean novels in the 21st century remain ‘un-dead’ and are still alive through the concept of potentiality connected to ‘impossible possibilities’.

보이는 절망과 보이지 않는 희망을 함께 이야기할 때 유의미한 개념이 ‘잠재성’(potentiality)이다. 잠재성은 ‘~하지 않을 능력’을 통해 보이는 절망 에 저항하면서 보이지 않는 희망을 추구하는 전략일 수 있기 때문이다. 특 히 조르조 아감벤의 논의에 의하면 허먼 멜빌의 소설 『필경사 바틀비』 속 주인공 바틀비가 이런 잠재성을 보여주는 대표적 인물이다. 바틀비는 ‘그러 지 않는 것이 좋겠습니다(I would prefer not to)’라는 말을 통해 근대의 질서나 가치를 비활성화시킨다. 21세기 한국의 젊은 작가들인 박솔뫼・김사과・한 유주는 이전의 20세기 소설들과는 다른 언어와 구성을 통해 바틀비적 면모 들을 보여준다. 박솔뫼는 「안 해」에서 ‘한다’라는 가능성과 ‘못한다’라는 불가능성의 틈새에서 ‘안 한다’라는 ‘중단’의 잠재성을 보여준다. 중단은 ‘하지 않음을 하기’라는 비잠재성의 잠재성을 통해 기존의 권력이 현실화 되는 것을 막으려는 데에 목적을 둔다. 김사과의 소설 「더 나쁜 쪽으로」에서 는 ‘더 나쁜 쪽으로’ 계속 움직이는 ‘반복’ 행위를 통해 잠재성이 지속될 수 있음을 보여준다. ‘더 나은 실패’를 반복함으로써 이전과는 다른 것이 될 수 있는 잠재성을 유지하려는 것이다. 「나는 필경……」에서 작가 한유주에게 중요한 것은 완성된 작품을 유예시킴으로써 글을 쓰지 않을 능력을 유지하 는 것 자체이다. 이런 유예의 잠재성은 이전의 글쓰기를 탈창조함으로써 ‘제2의 창조’를 가능하게 해준다. 이처럼 세 작가는 각기 ‘중단’・‘반복’・ ‘유예’의 서사를 통해 잠재성의 문학을 구현한다. 이들 작가들에게는 단순 히 ‘죽은 편지’(dead letters)를 의미하는 ‘배달 불능 편지’가 아니라 ‘안-죽은 (un-dead) 비밀문서나 메시지’로 기능하는 문학의 (불)가능성이 중요하기 때문이다.
