In Korean language education, the etymology is not official teaching and learning contents, but it has educational significance. First, the etymology enhances learners’ interest in Korean. Second, it enhances understanding of Korean culture and thought. Third, it improves grammatical analysis and improves thinking ability. Fourth, it helps to learn various content areas of Korean language. Based on this, I presented the appropriate etymology of each sub-field of grammar. Specifically, the relevant grammatical items dealing with the etymology in this article are as follows; the history of language(the generalization of language), the word formation, composition, and new words(morphology), the meaning change by vowel replacement and the various phonological changes(phonology), the vocabulary system, semantic relations of words, idiomatic expressions and proverbs(vocabulary semantics), the honorific and causative expressions(sentence theoriy), some provisions of Korean orthography and standard language regulation(Korean language norms), the history of phoneme(Korean language history).

국어 교육에서 어원은 보편적으로 다루는 교수ㆍ학습 내용이 아니지만, 교육적인 의의를 가지고 있다. 첫째, 우리말에 대한 학습자의 관심을 높여 준다. 둘째, 우리 민 족의 문화와 사상에 대한 이해를 높인다. 셋째, 문법적인 분석력을 높여 주고 사고력 을 향상시킨다. 넷째, 국어의 여러 내용 영역을 학습하는 데 도움을 준다. 이를 바탕으로 언어 일반론에서는 언어의 역사성과 관련하여, 형태론에서는 단어 의 형성 및 짜임, 새말과 관련하여, 음운론에서는 모음의 교체에 따른 의미 분화와 다 양한 음운 변동과 관련하여, 어휘의미론에서는 어휘의 체계, 단어의 의미 관계, 관용 표현 및 속담과 관련하여, 문장론에서는 높임 표현 및 사동 표현과 관련하여, 국어 규 범과 관련해서는 한글 맞춤법 및 표준어 규정의 일부 조항과 관련하여, 국어사에서는 주로 음운사와 관련하여 적절한 어원을 제시하였다.
