This study compared tasks of understanding idioms, response time of responding to idioms, and error types of understanding of idioms between teenage North Korean refugees (NKTRs) and South Korean teenagers. The purpose of this study was to try to find some features of NKTR's understanding of idioms. The objects of this study were 20 teenagers in total. 10 NKTRs who attended an alternative school for NKTRs in Seoul and 10 South Korean teenagers who attended G Practical Music Educational Institute of an academic high school, located in Gimhae, Gyeongnam. Research materials were a total of 30 questions. 15 questions consisted of idioms involving body parts and the other 15 questions consisted of idioms involving terms of daily life. Each question consisted of 3 figures. The results are following. South Korean teenagers had a significantly higher understanding of idioms than NKTRs. In response time to idioms, there was no significant difference between NKTR and SK teenagers. In response time to idioms, when the subjects were divided as above, it was found that there was also no significant difference between the two groups of NKTRs. when NKTR and SK teenagers were compared, NKTRs made more errors considering idioms literally and expecially in the idioms involving body parts they made this error. In this study, it was possible to find some features of the understanding of the idioms by NKTRs. It is expected to use this study for helpful materials, to enrich the vocabulary of NKTRs through understanding idioms correctly, and to help them adapt to the society of South Korea as good social communicators.

본 연구는 새터민 청소년의 관용어 이해 특성을 관용어 이해 과제와 관용어 반응시간, 관 용어 의미해석 오류유형으로 일반 청소년과 비교하여 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울 지역 에 거주하는 새터민 청소년 대안학교 소속 새터민 청소년 10명과 경남 김해에 거주하는 인문계 고등학교 소속 G실용음악 학원에 다니는 일반청소년 10명으로 총 20명이 본 연구에 참여하였 다. 연구자는 관용어를 신체 명칭이 포함된 관용어 15문항 및 일상 명칭이 포함된 관용어 15문 항을 포함해 총 30문항으로 구성하였으며 관용어 한 문항에 포함 된 그림 자료는 각 세 가지 그림으로 구성하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 새터민 청소년과 일반 청소년의 관용어 이해는 일반 청소년이 유의미하게 높은 것으로 나타났으며 신체 명칭 포함 관용어와 일상 명칭 포함 관용어에서 새터 민 청소년은 일반 청소년보다 낮은 이해능력을 보였다. 관용어 반응시간에는 유의미한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 둘째, 새터민 청소년과 일반 청소년의 관용어 의미해석 오류유형 비교에서 새 터민 청소년의 경우 축자적 의미해석 오류가 많았으며 일반 청소년은 축자적 의미해석보다 그 외 의미해석 오류가 더 많이 나타났다. 본 연구를 통하여 새터민 청소년은 관용어를 낯설게 느낄 뿐만 아니라 생소한 어휘와 문장에 어려움을 겪고 있으며 축자적으로 의미해석을 하는 경우가 많다는 결과를 얻게 되었다.
