In the 1910s, Hyeoksindan was a theater company representing Korea's theatrical company, while Hyeoksindan's performance Ssangongnu was a repertoire of performances by theater companies. The novel Ssangongnu was a very popular work for the audience at the time, and the adaptation script Ssangongnu was a pioneering example of the drama by adapting the novel. At present, the script of Ssangongnu has not survived. So this study aims at analyzing the stage photographs of the performances at the time, based on the serial novel Ssangongnu in Maeilsinbo. The photos of the performances excavated now stand out against the background of the Han River and the sea(Mokpo). Based on these photographs, it can be confirmed that the stage design of sea and water was utilized in performance. These cases are rare examples of theatrical history, and these cases are examples of experimental sense of challenge. Therefore, this study discusses the way of constructing this stage design, its contents, and the significance of performance of the stage effect.

1910년대 혁신단은 조선의 연극계를 대표하는 극단이었고, 혁신단의 공연작 <쌍옥루>는 극단을 대표하는 레퍼토리였다. 소설 <쌍옥루>는 당시 관객들에게 큰 인기를 끈 작품이었고, 각색 희곡 <쌍옥루>는 소설을 각색하여 희곡(대본)을 마련한 선구적인 사례였다. 현재 이 작품의 각색 대본은 남아 있지 않은 상태이다. 그래서 이 연구는 각색 대본의 원작이 되었을 『매일신보』 연재소설 <쌍옥루>를 바탕으로, 당시 공연 상황을 담은 무대 사진을 분석하는 데에 목표를 두고 있다. 남아 있는 공연 사진에는 한강과 바다(목포)를 배경으로 한 장면이 돋보이는데, 이러한 근거를 통해 <쌍옥루> 공연에서 바다와 물의 무대 디자인이 구현되었다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 사례는 연극사적으로 희귀한 사례에 해당하며 실험적인 도전 의식을 감지할 수 있는 경우이기도 하다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 무대 디자인의 구성 방식과 관련 내용 그리고 그 무대 효과와 공연사적 의의에 대해 논구할 것이다.
