The meaning of aging and death, which goes beyond scientific investigation, has been suggested by different religious traditions. For instance, Buddhism seeks to overcome aging and death, which is regarded as fundamental sufferings of humankind. However, aging and death, making us be aware of the transience of our life, paradoxically plays the positive role of interpreting present life as a process toward Nirvana (self-enlightenment). Although it is widely recognized that the central preoccupation of Confucianism, unlike Buddhism, lies in the political maintenance of this world, the order of this world is established by the practice of filial piety, and the significance of aging and death can only be understood under the ethical ideal based on filial piety. Since aging and death is understood by Christianity as the consequence of the Fall of man, this perverted state should be restored by God’s salvation. In sum, the significance of aging and death shared by different religions lies in their understanding of aging and death as a process toward human mental and spiritual growth.

노화와 죽음의 의미는 과학의 영역을 넘어서는 문제로 종교마다 이것에 대한 나름대로의 관점을 제 시해 오고 있다. 예를 들면, 불교는 삶과 죽음을 인간의 근본적 고통으로 간주하면서 해탈을 통해 그 고통을 극복하고자 한다. 하지만 역설적으로 불교에서 노화와 죽음은 인간이 삶의 무상성을 깨닫게 하여 삶을 해탈이라는 목표를 위한 과정으로 이해하게 하는 긍정적 역할을 한다. 한편 현세적 치세 에 관심이 많은 유교에서 노화와 죽음의 의의는 효의 실천을 통한 윤리적 이상 아래서만 이해될 수 있다. 기독교의 경우 노화와 죽음은 인간이 타락한 결과로 이해되며, 신의 구속은 노화와 죽음으로부 터의 해방을 가져다준다고 주장된다. 노화와 죽음에 대한 여러 종교의 공통적 교훈은 노화를 인간 성숙을 위한 정신적, 영적 과정으로 이해한다는 점에 있다.
