Most of developed countries including Korea have adopted the chronological age of 65 years as an arbitrary definition of old age. The age of 65 years would be matching with the pension eligibility age and/or retirement age. There is a high possibility of facing a serious risk of financial crisis in Korea in the near future owing to the rapidly aging population aging. For instance, the working-age population is gradually declining and the dependency ratio is getting higher and higher, resulting in very high likelihood of socioeconomic crisis. In order to alleviate the crisis, the government should make and enforce more assertive policies as early as possible than any other time. First of all, the policies should focus on raising the retirement age and/or pension eligibility age.

우리나라를 비롯하여 주요 선진국에서는 노인을 정의할 때 임의적으로 65세라는 연대기적 연령을 적 용하고 있다. 이는 연금 수급이 개시되는 연령이나 정년퇴직 연령하고 일치하기도 한다. 노인인구 비 율의 급속한 증가로 인해 우리나라는 머지않아 매우 위험한 재정적 위기에 직면할 가능성이 매우 높 다. 예를 들면, 생산가능 연령층의 감소와 그들의 부양 부담이 증폭하면서 사회경제적 혼란의 가능성 이 커질 수 있다. 이를 완화시키기 위해서 지금보다 더 적극적인 국가 정책들이 하루라도 빠른 시일 에 입안, 추진될 필요가 있다. 그 정책의 초점은 정년퇴직이나 연금수급 개시와 관련된 연령을 상향 하는 것부터 시작해야 한다.
