Until now, Korea's history curriculum has been changed under the influence of national and social needs. In particular, education in Korean history coincides with changes in the political situation and has become a political issue not only in terms of its content but also the publishing system. Through this series of situations, it would be meaningful to summarize the discussions that have been made around the textbook publishing system and to discuss the importance of modern and contemporary history, which is the most important issue in terms of the content composition of the curriculum. In order to look at this, changes in the history curriculum, including the revision of the history curriculum and the compilation of history lessons, need to be addressed as well. In this article, we will take a brief look at the changes in the publishing system of Korean history textbooks and the compilation of history lessons among history curricula since the end of the Gwangbok period, and examine how the contents of modern and contemporary history have changed. At any time, history education in any country is difficult to achieve regardless of political and social realities. However, boundaries will still be necessary for history to be used too much for the present.

지금까지 한국의 역사 교육과정은 국가적․사회적 요구의 영향을 받으며 변천되어 왔다. 특히 ‘한국사’ 교육과정은 정치적 상황의 변화와 맞물리며 그 내용 구성은 물론 발행체제에 이르기까지 대중들의 관심으로부터 멀리 떨어져 있었다고 말하기 어렵다. 이러한 측면을 고려해 보았을 때 교과서 발행제도를 둘러싼 그 동안의 논의를 정리해 보고, 교육과정의 내용구성 측면에서 가장 핵심이 되고 있는 문제인 근현대사의 비중에 관한 논의를 정면에서 다루어보는 것도 나름대로의 의미를 가질 수 있을 것이라고 생각된다. 이러한 내용을 살펴보기 위해서는 역사 교육과정의 개정 과정과 역사 교과의 과목 편제 등의 변화 역시 함께 다루어질 필요가 있다. 이 글에서는 광복 이후 지금까지 역사 교육과정 가운데 고등학교 ‘한국사’(舊 ‘국사’) 교과서의 발행체제 및 역사 교과의 과목 편제의 변천 과정을 대략적으로 살펴보고, 이러한 상황 속에서 학생들이 배우는 내용은 구체적으로 어떻게 달라져 갔는지를 근현대사의 비중을 중심으로 검토해 보고자 한다. 어느 시대, 어느 국가의 역사 교육도 정치․사회적 현실과 무관하게 이루어지기는 어려운 측면이 있다. 그러나 역사가 지나치게 현재를 위해 활용되는 현상에 대한 경계는 여전히 필요할 것으로 생각된다.
