This paper aims to find new values and significance in the fiction of Ha Geun-chan, known as a war writer, and most famous for the story “Sunanidae.” Ha Geun-chan shows concrete and clear reflection and evidence of the Korean War, and by extension the Second World War, and the modern world that justifies the logic of domination, obedience, conquest and conformity. In the process, he first portrays the war in concrete sense and experience, vividly portraying the lives of people in war time. The characters in Ha Geun-chan's stories are weed-like creatures who have nothing: victims of history and society. Ha Geun-chan's fiction shows empathy and compassion through the solidarity of the afflicted and the optimistic view of the world they have. His work also creates a fairy tale world of children who cannot see the world as a whole. While these children may be signs of immaturity, the presence of a narrator becomes a very important cover for revealing the writer's ideology and ideas, and produces a variety of effects for readers. This is due to the epic effect of the fairy tale setting that reveals a beautiful and pure world of sympathy. Ha Geun-chan's fiction crosses the turbulent landscape of modern Korean history and shows its experiences and realities as a specific world of sensations: a world of healthy and warm life, people's language, and purification.

본 논문은 전쟁의 작가, ｢수난이대｣의 작가로 알려진 하근찬 소설의 가 치와 의의를 새롭게 찾고자 하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 하근찬 소설이 의 미 있는 것은 전쟁을 작품의 소재로 삼았기 때문이 아니다. 도리어 그것 을 ‘어떻게’ 담아냈느냐가 더 중요한 것이다. 하근찬은 한국전쟁, 나아가 제2차 세계대전, 그리고 그러한 지배와 복 종, 정복과 순응의 논리를 정당화하는 ‘근대’세계에 대한 구체적이고도 선 명한 ‘성찰’과 ‘증언’을 보여준다. 이 과정에서 그는 먼저 구체적인 감각과 경험으로써 전쟁을 형상화하며 민중들의 삶을 생생하게 그려낸다. 또한 하근찬 소설 속 인물들은 아무것도 가지지 못한 잡초 같은 존재들이다. 이들은 역사와 사회가 만들어낸 희생자들이기도 하다. 그런데 하근찬 소 설은 한국 현대사의 한복판에서 처절하게 과거의 아픈 기억을 폭로하고 좌절하며 끝나지 않는다. 하근찬 소설은 고통당한 자들의 연대와 그들이 가진 낙천적인 세계관을 통해 공감과 연민의 정서를 보여주는 것이다. 한편 그의 작품은 어린아이들이 등장하는 동화적 성격을 보여준다. 세계를 총체적으로 바라보지 못하는 아이들은 미성숙의 표지일 수도 있다. 그러 나 서술자의 존재는 작가의 이데올로기와 사상을 드러내는 매우 중요한 표지가 되며 그것이 독서과정에서, 독자들에게 다양한 효과를 생산한다. 이는 아름답고 순수한 동심의 세계를 드러내는 동화적 설정이 주는 서사 효과 때문이다. 하근찬 소설은 거친 한국 근대사의 현장을 가로지르며 그 경험과 현실 들을 구체적인 감각의 세계로, 건강하고 따뜻한 생명과 민중의 언어로, 순수한 정화의 세계로 보여준다.
