This study investigates the effects of R&D investments and property right acquisitions of very small SMEs newly established in Korea on bank borrowings and the cost of debt financing, using firm-level data from 2010 till 2015 with 37,425 observations of 10,165 startups. We focus on their effects separately both in early-stage and later-stage after establishment. We find that the effects of R&D investments of early-stage startups are not negative on borrowing from banks, compared with the negative effects of later-stage startups' R&D, and that the effects of property right acquisitions of startups are not positive on borrowing from banks, compared with the positive effect of later-stage startups which is negative. We also find that the effect of R&D investments of early-stage startups are not negative on borrowing costs from banks, compared with the negative effect of later-stage startups, and that the effects of property right acquisitions of startups are not positive on borrowing costs from banks, compared with the positive effect of later-stage startups. The results imply that there exists a severe information asymmetry between the banks and early-stage startups about the quality of R&D activities, without any positive benefits of R&D activities and acquisitions of patent rights by very small startups, especially in their early stage after establishment.

본 연구는 국내 중소기업 대출 전문은행이 구축한 데이터베이스를 이용하여 2010년도부터 2015년까지의 10,165개 소규모 기업의 37,425 연도별 관측치를 토대로 연구개발 투자 및 지적 재산권 취득이 은행으로부터의 자금 차입금 및 차입비용에 미치는 영향을 내생성을 고려하여 2 단계 고정효과 패널모형(2SLS fixed effects panel regression)을 이용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 창업기업의 주요한 대출 및 자금지원 등의 주요한 기준이 되는 연구개발 투자나 특허권 등이 초 기창업기업에 대하여는 자금 차입이나 차입비용 절감에 도움이 못되는 것으로 나타났다. 창업후 5년이 지난 시점부터는 오히려 연구개발 투자 증가로 차입과 차입비용이 동시에 줄어들고, 지적 재산권 취득으로는 차입과 차입비용이 동시에 올라가는 상반된 현상을 보이고 있다. 따라서 성 장단계에 이르지 못한 초기창업기업들에 대한 연구개발과 특허 등 취득과 그에 따른 자금지원, 신용보증제도 등을 개선할 필요가 있는 것으로 판단된다.
