In this study, this researcher examined the effect of health status on social adaptation in South Korea targeting 316 North Korean defectors, and verified buffering effect of national identity in this process. PASW 18.0 was used to analyze the data. The results are as follows: First, as the results of analyzing factors affecting social adaptation of defectors in North Korea, economic status and family type among social demographic characteristics, subjective health and depression among domains of health status, and national identity and so on showed the great effect on social adaptation. Second, national identity has been shown to be able to significantly modulate the influence of depression and subjective health status on social adaptation, but it does not act as a buffer for the impact of disease morbidity on social adaptation. Based on these results of empirical analysis, this researcher proposed a practical and integrated plan to improve the health status of North Korean defectors and help them to adapt to South Korean society. Furthermore, the results of this study can contribute to the establishment of the health and medical policy for improving the health status of North Korean residents and the policy for adapting to the South Korean society at the beginning of the unification. In addition, we can find the significance of the study, which has provided basic data necessary for the social integration of unified Korea, while discussing the social adaptation and integration problems that may arise in the unification process.

본 연구에서는 북한이탈주민 316명을 연구대상으로 건강상태가 남한사회 적응에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 이 요인 간의 관계에서 국민정체성의 조절효과를 검증하였다. 자료분석을 위하여 PASW 18.0을 이용하였으며, 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 북한이탈주민들의 사회적응에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석한 결과, 인구사회학적 특성 중에서 경제상태와 가족형태, 건강상태 영역에서의 주관적 건강과 우울, 그리고 국민정체성이 사회적응에 크게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 국민정체성은 건강상태에서의 우울과 주관적 건강상태가 사회적응에 미치는 영향력을 유의미하게 조절할 수 있는 것으로 나타났으나, 질병 이환이 사회적응에 미치는 영향력 대해서는 완충역할을 하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 실증적 분석결과를 토대로 북한이탈주민들의 건강상태를 개선하고, 남한사회에서의 적응을 도모할 수 있는 실질적이고 통합적인 방안을 제시하였다. 나아가, 본 연구결과는 통일 초기 북한지역 주민들의 건강상태 개선을 위한 보건·의료정책 및 남한사회 적응을 위한 정책 수립에 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 남북한 통일과정에서 발생할 수 있는 사회적응 및 통합 문제를 거론하면서, 통일 이후 남북한의 후유증을 최소화하고, 통일 한국의 사회통합에 필요한 기초자료를 제공했다는데 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
