The designated scope of the Ungchi Battleground classified as Historic Site No. 25 in North Jeolla Province on April 2, 1976 does not match the actual battle site of the Ungchi Battle during the Imjin war. Given the literature, biography, geographical names, and recent archaeological achievements since the late 1980s, the main battleground of the Ungchi battle has been found to be around Deokbong-gil. As a result, this has raised the need to change the scope of the Ungchi battleground. Having reviewed various viewpoints, this paper observes that the site of the Ungchi battleground should not be zoned in the form of points but should be long and linear along the road. This paper also redefines the time and area of the Ungchi battleground and reflects the history of the Ungchi battle and the meaning of the Ungchi ‘Old Raod(Yet gil)’ based on archaeological achievements. In particular, the Ungchi battleground was divided into three categories: Singi Village – Dumok Village section, Singi Village – Andeokwon section, and Gomtijae-gil section, according to the Ungchi battle. Among these, the section which includes Singi Village to Andeokwon and Gomtijaegil, is designated as the target area. This designated scope should be readjusted sequentially and expanded in stages considering the survey progress, performance and conditions. In order to utilize the cultural assets, in-depth investigation, research, and verification of the Ungchi battle and the entire battleground is necessary. In particular, a comprehensive survey covering the area around Deokbong-gil to the area leading to Andeokwon should be carried out simultaneously. A comprehensive use plan that encompasses the Imjin War, the old road(Yet Gil), and the Jeolla province as well as the history of the Ungchi battle should be planned and implemented through academic support for readjustment of the scope, archaeological verification, and active cooperation between cities, counties and provinces.

1976년 4월 2일 전라북도 기념물 제 25호로 지정된 웅치전적지의 지정범위는임진왜란 당시 웅치전투 실제 전투지와 일치하지 않는다. 1980년대 후반부터 문헌· 전승·지명 조사, 최근의 고고학적 성과로 미루어 볼 때, 웅치전투의 주 격전지는 덕봉길주변임이 밝혀지고 있다. 이에 따라 웅치전적지 지정범위에 대한 변경의 필요성이 커졌다. 다양한 견해를 검토하여, 본고에서는 웅치전투의 시·공간성을 재정립하고, 고고학적 성과를 바탕으로 웅치전투의 역사성과 웅치 ‘옛 길’의 의미를 투영하여, 웅치전적지가 점적공간이 아닌 선상으로 이루어진 공간으로 지정되어야 한다고 보았다. 구체적으로 웅치전투의 추이에 따라 신기마을〜두목마을 구간, 신기마을〜안덕원 일대 구간, 곰티재길을 포함한 구간의 3개 범주로 나누었다. 이 가운데, 신기마을에서 안덕원 일대에 이르는 구간, 곰티재길을 포함한 구간을 최종지정 목표로 삼고, 조사경과와 성과, 지정여건을 충분히 감안하여 지정범위를 순차적으로재조정하고 단계별로 확대해 나가야 한다고 보았다. 아울러 문화재 활용을 위해, 지정범위의 조정은 물론, 웅치전투와 전적지에 대한 심도 깊은 조사와 연구, 고증이 지속적으로 필요하고, 특히 덕봉길 주변으로 집중되어 있는 조사경향에서 탈피하여 안덕원에 이르는 지역까지 포괄한 전면적 조사가 동시에 진행되어야 한다. 지정범위 조정을 위한 학문적 뒷받침, 고고학적 실증, 그리고 도와 시군의 적극적 협력을 통해, 웅치전투의 역사성은 물론 임진왜란, 옛 길, 전라도를 아우르는 종합적 활용방안이 계획되고 구현되어야 할 것이다.
