Illaksa Temple is located at the foot of southeast of Mt. Sangwangsan in Haemi-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnamdo. There are no historical documents that make us know the history of Illaksa Temple. However, there remain a three-story stone pagoda which was built during Goryeo Dynasty and statue of the Buddha and Buddhist painting which were made during the late Joseon Dynasty in the precincts of Illaksa Temple . Amita Seated Statue, 90 cm high (No. 208 of Chungcheongnamdo cultural property) is housed in Amitajeon (former main temple) in Illaksa Temple which had been known as iron statue of the Buddha for a long time but found to be gilt-bronze statue of the Buddha through analysis of components conducted recently. Gilt-bronze Amita Seated Statue in Illaksa Temple has common in gilt-bronze statues of the Buddha found in Chungcheong-do and estimated to have been built in 14th century during the late Goryeo Dynasty in style and is characterized by low yukgye, an inverted triangle sangho, flat body and simple drapery. Geumganggye, Taejanggye darani found in bokjang of statue of the Buddha matches darani which was found in Gilt-bronze Amita Seated Statue that is estimated to have been made in 1302 and is housed in Onyang Folk Museum, which implies that gilt-bronze statue of the Buddha in Illaksa Temple was made in 14th century. When comparing cast condition and alloy ratio, it is found that Gilt-bronze Amita Seated Statue in Illaksa Temple is similar to statues of the Buddha which were made in 14th century in Chungcheong-do. Based on maps and historical documents between the early 16th century and the late 19th century during Joseon Dynasty, Illaksa Temple was called Illacsa (日岳寺). The name of Illaksa is found in the asset book of the Japanese Government General of Korea and Sakyamuni Tathagata iron statue is recorded in the same size on the list of the asset book. Historical documents on the temple are not left in Illaksa Temple but Gilt-bronze statue and stone pagoda which were made during Goryeo Dynasty, sojo statue of the Buddhist and bell of a Buddhist temple (stolen) which were made during Joseon Dynasty and the main temple and Buddhist painting which were rebuilt in modern times. The author of this paper hopes that Buddhist cultural properties in Illaksa Temple that survived lots of wars and fires so far will be preserved and managed in a systematic manner and histoty of the temple will be reorganized.
