This study examines the nature of the discourse that has been produced and reproduced by the other Japan, which has constantly been discussed in Korean society. This study focuses on the situation of this period and examines the context in which Japanese-related discourses related to popular culture have been produced in Korean society. Especially, in this study, the discussion was based on the theory of cultural imperialism. Cultural imperialism is the view that a relation of domination and subordination is formed as advanced capitalist countries culturally infiltrate relatively low-growth countries. Based on this theoretical background, we analyzed the discourse on the opening of Japanese popular culture in the 1990s. As a result, the discourse on the other Japan, is still correlated with the operation of anti-Japanese nationalism, which ultimately implies the production and reproduction of the image of imperial Japan. In addition, the discourse on domination and subordination in the cultural domain has also become the most concerning part of the article on the opening of Japanese popular culture. However, in the case of the Korean Wave phenomenon that has occurred in Japan since 2002, the critical position on cultural imperialism, that is, the interpretation that emphasizes the activeness of the receiver has become persuasive. Ultimately, it is necessary to understand that the existence of Japan as the other in Korean society is constantly encouraging discourse that implies a kind of bilateralism or pluralism. This suggests that the study of Japan as the other from the post-imperialist point of view should be continued.

본고는 한국사회에서 끊임없이 논의의 대상이 된 일본이라고 하는 타자가 어떠한 담론을 생산/재생산해 왔는지에 관해 고찰해 본 것이다. 본고는 이러한 시대적 상황에 주목하여, 한국사회에서 대중문화에 관련된 일본 관련 담론이 어떠한 맥락에서 생산되어 왔는지를 고찰하고자 한다. 특히, 본고에서는 문화제국주의론에 입각하여 논의를 전개하였다. 문화제국주의는 선진 자본주의국가가 상대적으로 저성장된 국가에 문화적 침투를 통해 지배와 종속의 형태가 이루어지고 있다는 견해이다. 이러한 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 1990년대 일본대중문화개방에 관한 담론을 분석하였다. 그 결과 일본이라고 하는 타자에 대한 담론이 여전히 반일내셔널리즘의 작동과 상관관계에 있으며, 이는 궁극적으로 제국주의 일본이라고 하는 이미지가 암묵적으로 생산/재생산되고 있다는 점이다. 또한, 문화적 영역에서의 지배/종속에 관한 담론도, 일본대중문화개방과 관련된 기사에서 가장 우려한 부분으로 드러났다. 그런데 2002년 이후 일본에서 일어난 한류현상을 보면, 문화제국주의론에 대한 비판적 입장, 즉 수용자가 갖고 있는 능동성을 강조한 해석이 설득력 있게 전개되고 있다. 결국에는 한국사회에서 타자로서의 일본이라고 하는 존재는 일종의 양면성이나 다원성을 함축적으로 포함하고 있는 담론 생산이 끊임없이 발생한다고 이해할 필요가 있다. 이는 앞으로 포스트 제국주의인 관점에서 타자로서의 일본에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 필요성을 제기하고 있다.
