Parents who lost their children, who attended Ansan Danwon High School, due to the Sewol ferry disaster on April 16, 2014 have been performing various activities since the time of the disaster. This paper tries to clarify the process of and its meaning to the people who have been living everyday life as the "Sewol Ferry Family". Immediately after the disaster, the parents were placed in Jindo. At this time, they met with the government that did not rescue, and attempted to 'march on the Jindo Bridge' to Seoul while being isolated. Signing activities requiring special legislation in 2014 was the opportunity for the parents to meet with the citizens. Resistance, anger, disbelief and resignation were widespread when family members came into direct contact with the government in 2014-15. In the National Assembly and Cheongwoon-dong, the movement was controlled because it was centered on the 'Sewol ferry Family' and when the physical conflict with the public authority occurred, it was subject to thorough suppression. Unlike the past, parents have become people who fight persistently. The bereaved family tried not only to communicate with the government but also to society, and had a moment of lamenting with themselves. They held a gathering around the country, and in February 2015, there was a ripening ceremony for the same walk from Ansan to Jindo. Bereaved parents were able to get active through the activity and have a sense of solidarity and a small sense of accomplishment. However, when there was no activity or when the activity was over, there was also emptiness or pain. Families being required to be "bereaved" to limit daily activities such as laughing or singing, and negative stigma is being reinforced. The activities of the parents of the survivors are conscious acts aiming to clarify the facts, but there is nothing else that can be done, so it is also a choice and a mourning movement. This is the driving force that allows society to remember, mourn, and historicize the disaster in the long run.

2014년 4월 16일의 세월호 참사로 안산 단원고에 다니던 자녀를 잃은 부모들은 참사 당시부터 현재까지 다양한 활동을 하고 있다. 이 글에서는 일상을 살아가던 사람 들이 ‘세월호 유가족’이 되었던 과정과 그 의미를 밝히고자 하였다. 참사 직후 부모들 의 장소는 진도 팽목항이었다. 이때 구조하지 않는 정부를 대면하고, 고립되어 있는 상태에서 서울로 향하는 ‘진도대교 행진’을 시도하였다. 2014년 특별법 제정을 요구 하는 서명 활동은 부모들이 시민들과 직접 만나게 되는 계기였다. 2014~15년에 유 가족이 정부를 직접 접촉하게 될 때는 저항과 분노, 불신과 체념이 컸다. 국회와 청운 동에서의 농성에서는 ‘세월호 유가족’이기 때문에 이동이 통제되었고, 공권력과 물리 적 충돌이 벌어질 때는 철저한 진압의 대상이 되었다. 부모들은 과거와 달리 욕하고 싸우는 사람이 되어갔다. 유가족은 정부뿐만이 아니라 사회와 계속해서 대화를 시도 하고자 했고, 자신과도 애도하는 순간을 가지게 되었다. 전국 곳곳에서 간담회를 열었 고, 2015년 2월에 안산부터 진도까지의 도보행진과 같은 해의 삭발식이 있었다. 유 가족 부모들은 활동을 통해 활기를 얻기도 하고, 연대감과 작은 성취감을 가질 수 있 었지만 활동이 없을 때, 활동이 끝난 후 공허함이나 아픔이 배가되기도 했다. 유가족 에게는 웃거나 노래하는 등의 일상의 행위를 제약할 정도로 ‘유가족다움’이 요구되며 부정적인 낙인이 강화되고 있다. 유가족 부모들의 활동은 진상 규명을 촉구한다는 목 적의식적 행위이기도 하지만, 할 수 있는 일이 그것밖에 없어서 선택하는 일, 스스로 애도하는 움직임이기도 하다. 이것은 장기적으로 사회가 참사를 기억하고, 함께 애도 하며 역사화 할 수 있게 하는 원동력이다.
