In contemporary art in the 20th century, women's body expressions are still limited and oppressed, and female artists raise questions about the distorted images of women created and shaped in modern society. Female artists want to find the body of a woman as a subject even though they reject the idealized and fixed female body. They want to express the meaning of a woman's body as a place to express her desire, not male-centered. Saint Orlan (1947 ~), a multimedia artist and performance artist in France, does not mean a body that meets the standards of beauty defined by western male society through the performance of plastic surgery, And to destroy the existing standardized order system by opening up the possibility of fluid change. Through the Plastic surgery performance, Orlan wanted to express her thoughts about the history of the socio-cognitive body, which was embraced throughout the Western art history, with the production of her works. She also implemented new aesthetic aspects in the contemporary art by separating an artist’s, her own body. In this performance she went through a process that transcended the pain of flesh being torn apart in the society of art. Through this, self-healing and emancipatory act finally reached positive pleasure.

20세기 동시대미술에서도 여전히 여성의 신체표현은 제한되고 억압되어왔으며 여성 예술가들은현대 사회에서 만들어지고 길들여진 왜곡된 여성 이미지에 대해 문제를 제기하였다. 여성 예술가들은 이상화되고 고정된 여성의 신체를 거부하고 주체로서의 여성의 신체를 찾고자하였다. 이들은 여성의 신체를 남성 중심적이 아닌 여성 자신의 욕망을 표현하는 장소로서의 의미를 표현하고자 했다. 프랑스의 멀티미디어 예술가이자 행위예술가인 생트 오를랑(Saint Orlan, 1947~)은 성형수술 퍼포먼스를 통하여 서구 남성중심의 사회구조가 규정한 미(美)의 기준에 맞추어 가는 신체를 의미하는것이 아닌 오히려 모든 것이 고정되어 있지 않고 유동적으로 변화할 수 있는 가능성을 열어둠으로써고착화되고 표준화된 기존의 질서체계를 붕괴시키고자 하였다. 성형수술 퍼포먼스에서 오를랑은 서양미술사 전반에 이르는 사회 인지적 신체의 역사를 수용하였다는 것을 작업을 통해서 표현하고자 했으며 동시대미술에서 작가이자 자기 자신의 신체를 작품으로분리하여 새로운 미적양상을 구현해내었다. 이 퍼포먼스에서 그녀는 예술이라는 사회 안에서 살을도려내는 고통을 뛰어넘는 과정을 통하여 자기 치유적이고 해방적인 행위로 결국 긍정적 쾌에 도달하였다.
