This paper has reviewed tradition aesthetics of South Korea and Japan in the silent film from the perspective of the visual arts, and its characteristics were obtained. The film industry of the two countries has found of each traditional beauty in the course that accommodates of Western movies, it was forced to leave indelible scars. Japanese film has actively mimic the format of the Western movie based on the traditional arts, and create creativity. And it was built by the Japanese film ever In-depth beauty of traditional. Meanwhile, South Korea has accepted a Western movie and ideology of Japan. Eventually, depicting 'Superficial beauty of traditional' with the hybrid and the vestiges of the colony. Tradition is reorganized by the surrounding environment or ideology every time. But its value standard has preoccupied the place of '美'. Traditional beauty is that to obtain a new modern through aesthetic experience. Meanwhile, many artists sought to "modernize tradition. It would've tradition, was also keeping the tradition. However, the tradition is that the concept is being dismantled, it disappears and the reality. Therefore, Superficial and In-depth beauty of traditional in Korea and Japan is sought to contain a strong longing for premodern.

이 논문은 영상예술의 관점에서 한일 무성영화의 전통미학을 검토하고 그 특성을 도출했다. 양국의 영화계는 서구 영화를 수용하는 과정에서 제각기 전통미를 발견한 측면도 있지만, 지울 수 없는 상흔을 남길 수밖에 없었다. 일본영화는 전통예능을 발판으로 서구 영화의 형식을 적극적으로 모방하며 독창성을 창출하였고, 심층적 전통미를 영상에 담아내어 일본적 영화세계를 구축하였다. 한편 한국영화는 서구적인 스타일과 일본적인 관념이 깔려있고, 혼종과 식민지의 흔적을 남긴 ‘표층적 전통미’를 묘출했다. 전통은 시대마다 주변 환경이나 이념에 의해 재편성되지만, 그 가치기준은 여하튼 ‘美’의 자리를 선취해왔다. 전통미는 심미적 경험을 통해 새로운 의미로서의 모던을 획득하기 때문이다. 그동안 많은 예술가들이 추구해 온 ‘전통의 현대화’는 전통과 멀어지면서 또한 전통을 지키는 수단이었다. 그런데 전통은 근대가 가져온 ‘개념의 해체’가 지속되면서 그 실체가 녹아버리고 있다. 그래서 한국의 표층적 전통미와 일본의 심층적 전통미는 모두 전근대에 대한 강한 그리움을 담고자 했던 것이다.
