The purpose of this thesis is to clarify the characteristics of Yukichi Fukuzawa’s view on Ainu ethnicity from comparison with the view on Koreans. However, Fukuzawa refers to the Ainu people only in five places in the book. It can be judged that Fukuzawa’s view on the Ainu who was seen from there was regarded as barbarous. However, as with Isabella Bird’s travel memorandum, it is only an evaluation reflecting the general view of civilization at the time. On the other hand, regarding Korea, it has been consistent at the half-way through “Fukuoka Hundred Episodes” (1896) since the late “Civilization Theory Summary” (1875), and we could not confirm the fact that the development stage of the country was barbarous.

일본어

本論文の目的は、福沢諭吉のアイヌ民族観の特質を朝鮮人観との比較から明らかにすることにある。ただし、福沢によるアイヌ民族への言及は著作中で5ヵ所にしかない。そこからうかがわれる福沢のアイヌ人観は、野蛮と見なしてしていたと判断できる。ただしそれは、イザベラ･バードの紀行文と同様、当時の一般的な文明観を反映した評価にすぎないのである。いっぽう朝鮮については󰡔文明論之概略󰡕(1875)以来晩年の󰡔福翁百話󰡕(1896)まで半開で一貫していて、国の発展段階を野蛮とした事実は確認できなかった。
