The paper shall concentrate the study on inter-textuality between Chung-yung and the Gospels. This study intends to understand the Confucian view of sincerity(誠) and to investigate the possibility of Confucian and Christian mutual communication of the view of sincerity/discipleship. Concepts of ‘being sincere(誠)’ and ‘being a disciple’ are tenets in the Confucian and Christian thoughts and behaviors. Sincerity and discipleship became the central meaning of ren and mercy and constituted the root of human behavioral practice. Because the concepts of sincerity and discipleship relate to the structural pattern of human’s attitudes and behaviors, sincerity “points to human reality which is not only the basis of self-knowledge but also the ground of the human participation with Heaven.” Ren(仁) and mercy are the heart of human behavior within community in Chung-yung and the Gospels. What shared the Christian and Confucian understanding of ren and mercy is the union between the way of heaven and the way of human.

서양의 기독교는 초월적 계시를 통한 하나님과 사람의 만남을 중요시했다면, 동양의 유교는 초월과 내재 간의 합일을 통한 조우를 중시하였다. 이제 동양과 서양의 활발한 소통을 중시하면서, 『중용』은 서양 기독교와 동양 유교의 상이한 세계관을 연결시킬 수 있는 가교로 인식되기 시작하였다. 궁극적 내재로서 사람의 본성은 초월적 형이상의 실체이기에, 『중용』의 성(性)은, 기독교에서 말하는, 피조물에게 부여된 하나님의 형상과 유사하다. 하늘의 형상 또는 성을 부여받은 존재는 성(誠)해야 하는 삶을 살아야 한다. 성을 체현한 것이 소위 성(誠)한 삶이다. 그리고 인(仁)의 길은 사람의 도(道)를 이루는 것이며, 성(誠)함을 하늘의 도(道)를 이루는 것으로 이해한다. 이와 유사한 것은 복음서의 제자도 개념이다. 예수의 제자 됨이란 예수와 합일(合一)하는 것을 말한다. 왜냐하면 복음서에서 예수의 오심은 말씀(言)이 사람이 되어(成) 우리 가운데 있게 된 사건이며, 또한 예수의 십자가도 하나님의 말씀(言)을 ‘다 이루신’(成) 사건이기 때문이다. 복음서는 예수의 제자의 길을 가르쳐야 하는 것을 명령하고 있다(마 28:19).
