This qualitative study was designed to investigated and further understand military experiences affecting internal transition and student development. Ten college students, all enrolled in private university, participated in semi-structured interviews. As a result, four key factors like relationships, opportunities, challenges, and reflections play a role in order for student veterans to develop their internal transition. Unlikely in military boot camps without ranks, students have become mature by overcoming uncomfortable relations between ranks(challenges), directly or indirectly working with various people(relationships), succeeding in assignments in their military bases where different ranks exist(opportunities), and taking time to reflect their life(reflection). Military service provided platform to share ideas and experiences with others whose backgrounds and view points differ from their own. During their miliary service, students had chance of developing their academic and social life by dealing with people from different backgrounds. This experience provided students with the opportunity to achieve internal transition. This knowledge can be helpful as a reference for student affairs professionals who are willing to develop college retention and success programs.

이 연구는 군 복학생들의 내재적 전환에 영향을 미친 군 경험을 살펴보고 학생들의 성장을 자 극한 경험의 특성을 탐색하고자 했다. 지방 사립대학에 다니고 있는 10명의 군복무 경험이 있는 학생들이 면담에 참여하였다. 연구결과, 공동체 시공간속에서 관계, 기회, 도전, 성찰이라는 경험 의 4요소가 계급과 함께 학생들의 성장을 자극하고 있었다. 학생들은 무계급의 공동체(훈련소 생 활)와는 다르게 계급의 공동체(자대 생활)에서 계급 간 불편한 관계를 극복함으로써, 다양한 사람 들과의 직접 또는 간접적 경험의 기회를 얻음으로써, 주어진 직무에 도전하고 성공함으로써, 그 리고 자기 성찰의 시간을 가짐으로써 한층 성숙해지는 과정을 경험하고 있었다. 특히 군대는 지 역, 학력, 경력 등의 한계를 넘어 새로운 정보와 다양한 경험을 공유할 수 있는 경험의 플랫폼이 었다. 이곳에서 학생들은 다양한 배경의 사람들을 호시탐탐하는 과정을 통해 자신의 삶의 범주 를 뛰어넘는 기회를 얻게 되었다. 그 기회가 학생들의 내재적 전환을 자극하는 강력한 무기가 되 었다. 이 연구 결과는 학생들의 중도이탈을 막고 학생 성공을 기원하는 대학교육 전문가들에게 서비스 및 프로그램 개발에 기초적인 자료를 제공하고 있다.
