The purpose of this paper is to envision the essential feature of Good Educational Practice(GEP) as a effective and innovative model for balanced education. More specifically, it aims at fostering good educational practices which overcome the traditional dichotomy of ‘liberal’ and ‘vocational’ education and link general education to major education. The GEP is intended to suggest undergraduate students how to enhance creative and convergent thinking and how to apply their knowledge to new problems and unexpected situations across the curriculum. This study is organized as follows. The first section analyzes the crises of university education in the fast-changing society. The second section summarize the feature of GEP. The GEP initiative promotes (1) process-centered education which encourages a student’s development through knowledge (2) practice-centered education which does not separate learning from its application in ethical context, (3) education to enhance the formation of tacit knowledge, (4) student-initiated education based on self-directed learning. The third section summarizes the general education plan of Frontier College. Frontier College sets educational objective as ‘Balanced Education’ by considering the core elements of liberal education and tries to accomplish the educational objective through six strategies. The final section clarifies the importance of professor’s role in charge of general education. Educational excellence can be demonstrated in the shared responsibility which requires organizational collaboration as well as professor’s individual effort.

본 글의 목적은 균형잡힌 교육을 위한 효과적이고 혁신적인 모델로서 바람직한 교육실천의 본 질적 특징을 구체화하는 데 있다. 보다 구체적으로는 자유교육과 직업교육의 전통적 구분을 극복 하고, 교양교육과 전공교육을 이어줄 수 있는 바람직한 교육실천을 장려하는 데 역점을 두고 있 다. 바람직한 교육실천은 학부생들에게 범교과적으로 창의융복합적 사고를 증진하고, 자신의 지 식을 새로운 문제와 예기치 않은 상황에 적용할 수 있는 방법을 제시한다. 본 글은 다음과 같이 구성되어 있다. 첫 번째 장은 급변하는 사회 속에서 학부교육의 위기를 분석한다. 두 번째 장은 바람직한 교육실천의 특징을 요약한다. 바람직한 교육실천을 위한 계획 은 (1) 지식을 통해 학생의 발전을 도모하는 과정중심의 교육을 (2) 윤리적 맥락에서 배움과 적용 이 분리되지 않은 실천중심의 교육을 (3) 암묵적 지식의 형성을 일깨우는 교육을 (4) 자기주도학 습에 기초한 학생주도형 교육을 증진한다. 세 번째 장은 프런티어 학부대학의 교양교육 계획을 요 약한다. 프런티어학부대학은 교양교육의 핵심요소를 고려하여 ‘균형잡힌 교육’을 교육목표로 설정 하고, 여섯 개의 추진전략을 통해 교육목표를 달성하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 마지막 장은 교양교 육을 담당하고 있는 교수자의 역할의 중요성을 분명히 한다. 교육의 수월성은 교수자 개인의 노 력뿐만 아니라 유기적 협력을 필요로 하는 공유된 책임 속에서 입증될 수 있다.
