Heaney’s long critical attention to Yeats indicates that Heaney considers Yeats a great literary heritage. In Heaney we can find Yeats’s heritages, including, among other things, the great pride as a national bard without damaging their own aesthetical style and a precious lesson that art has to be made by the laborious efforts. Yeats, a predecessor of Nobel prize winning and inner émigré, helps Heaney expand his vision from the local to Europe and the world. However, Heaney sticks to a double attitude towards Yeats. First, Heaney has the tradition contrary to Yeats’s, embracing the five phases of modern Irish literature. Second, Heaney comes closer to the Irish traditional identity. However, the later poems of both poets, characterized by returning to their own kind of omphalos, confirm my hypothesis above. Taken together, Yeats’s influence on Heaney is not sweeping but limited.

히니가 예이츠를 오랫동안 비평의 대상으로 관심을 보인 것은 그가 예 이츠를 위대한 문학유산으로 간주했음을 말해준다. 그러나 히니의 예이츠에 대한 태도 는 늘 긍정적인 것만은 아니었다. 그 이유는 그 둘은 대립되는 문학 전통을 가졌고 특히 히니는 예이츠 외에도 다양한 현대 아일랜드 문학전통을 계승했기 때문이다. 그 리고 그 두 작가를 전통적인 문학이라는 잣대로 재어보면 히니가 조금 더 주류 전통 에 근접함을 알 수 있다. 게다가 그들이 아일랜드를 넘어 유럽 그리고 세계적으로 확 대 된 비전을 제시할지라도 그들의 후기 시는 서로 대립되는 자신들의 전통으로 회기 한 현상을 볼 수 있다. 위의 것을 종합해 볼 때 예이츠가 히니에게 미친 영향은 제한 적일 수밖에 없다.
