W. B. Yeats represents both the Wise Man and the Fool, the conflict between the Wise man and an Angel, and the opposition between the Wise Man and his pupils. Through the play more emphasis is laid on the Fool: the Fool’s life is more important than the Wise Man’s life. Especially, it is characteristic of post-mortality play. The play shows the Wise Man’s internal conflicts, when dying, and describes the transmigration of his soul, suggesting how his soul will be in the afterlife. This play opens up the realm of post-mortality play by surpassing the structure of Western mortality plays such as Oedipus the King.

예이츠는 『모래시계』에서 현자와 바보 사이의 양의성, 현자와 천사의 갈등, 현자와 학생들 사이의 대립을 재현한다. 이 과정에서, 그는 현자의 삶보다 바보 의 삶의 중요성을 더욱 강조한다. 특히, 현자가 죽어가는 과정에서 일어나는 내면의 갈등과 그가 죽은 후에 어떻게 될 것인지에 대한 윤회에 대한 묘사는 포스트 운명극 의 특징을 보여준다. 그러므로 이 극작품은 『오이디푸스 왕』과 같은 서구의 운명극의 구조를 뛰어넘어 포스트 운명극의 영역을 새롭게 열어 놓았다.
