In both Yeats’s “Lapis Lazuli” and Brown’s “Ma Rainey,” tragic scenes are transformed into happy ones through the magic of art, where even “mournful melodies” produce pleasure in “Lapis Lazuli” and the blues generate communal excitement that evokes gratitude from her audience, which is sung into existence through the artistry of Rainey. It is clear that there was a connection between the Irish and New Negro Renaissances, and that vernacular speech, musicality, and performance was a central element of both. In “The Fiddler of Dooney” and “When de Saints,” both Yeats and Brown foreground the importance of the folk tradition to generating an indigenous poetic tradition strongly identified with the folk aimed at expressing “the yearning for self-glorification in art.”
