This paper investigates the Seon (禪: Zen) Thought of Bong-am Beon Wol-ju (峰庵 邊月周, 1909-1975). The only source of Bong-am’s Seon thought is his note on "Lecture on the Seon Studies". This "Lecture on the Seon Studies" was created in Bong-am’s own handwriting in 1956. Though the "Lecture on the Seon Studies" is not a long article, it touches all the points on Zen. Especially, the lecture is characterized by not only the introduction of Zen theories but the emphasis on its practice as well. The “Lecture on the Seon Studies” consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 deals mainly with Zen’s Essence, Chapter 2 Zen’s Concept, Chapter 3 Hwadoo-seon(話頭禪), Chapter 4 Zen’s Practice, and Chapter 5 the Genealogy of Zen(Transmission of the Lamp). Among these, Bong-am’s unique Seon Thought appears in Chapters 2, 3, and 4. In Chapter 2 Zen’s Concept, Bong-am defined “Zen refers to his Simji (心地).” It is an ancient tradition in East Asian Buddhism that Zen is regarded as ‘Simji’ or ‘the foundation of the mind.’ In addition, while Bong-am’s thought is based on Josa-seon (祖師禪), he takes the position of sudden enlightenment and gradual practice (頓悟漸修). This is a characteristic theory of Hataek-jong (荷澤宗) influenced by the Theory on the Awakening of Faith in Mahāyāna (『大乘起信論』). That Bong-am places a stress on the importance of probation after the sudden enlightenment at the end of Chapter 2 is the evidence of his position. Chapter 3 Hwadoo-seon (話頭禪) reinterprets Zen on the basis of the knowledge he gained through various books on Zen and experiences he attained by its true practice. Through the passages he quotes, we can see how many Zen books he read and how well versed he was in them. In Chapter 4, the Zen’s Practice is divided into sitting positions in Zen meditation (坐禪儀) and the essence of its practice. Above all, Bong-am emphasizes that a meditator’s attitude is more important than his sitting position while practicing Zen. Moreover, he once again lays emphasis on the true Zen practice as its authentic meaning by introducing the importance of essential teachings for Hwadoo-seon (話頭禪) practice in such books as Baksan seongyeong-eo (『博山禪警語』), Seongwan chaejin (『禪關策進』), and Seonga gwigam (『禪家龜鑑』). It shows what a pure Zen practicer he is.

본 논문은 峰庵 邊月周(1909∼1975)의 禪思想을 다룬 것이다. 봉암의 선사상을 알 수 있는 유일한 자료는 그가 남긴 「禪學講義」 노트이다. 이 「선학강의」는 1956년 봉암이 직접 육필로 작성한 것이다. 이 「선학강의」는 분량이 많지 않지만, 선에 관한 핵심은 모두 담고 있다. 특히 「선학강의」는 선의 이론을 소개하는데 그치지 않고, 實參實修를 강조하고 있는 것이 특징이다. 「선학강의」는 모두 다섯 章(chapter)으로 구성되어 있다. 즉 제1장 禪의 要諦, 제2장 禪의 槪念, 제3장 話頭禪, 제4장 禪의 修習, 제5장 禪의 系譜(경덕전등록)이다. 이 가운데 봉암의 고유한 선사상은 제2장, 제3장, 제4장에 나타난다. 제2장 禪의 槪念에서 ‘禪은 자기의 心地를 가리킨 것’이라고 정의했다. 禪을 ‘心地’, 즉 ‘마음의 본바탕’이라고 파악한 것은 동아시아불교에서는 이미 오래된 전통이다. 또한 봉암은 祖師禪에 바탕을 두고 있지만, 頓悟漸修의 입장을 취하고 있다. 이것은 『大乘起信論』의 영향을 받은 荷澤宗의 특징적인 說이다. 봉암은 제2장 末尾에서 頓悟 후의 修習, 즉 保任의 중요성을 강조하고 있는 것이 그 증거라고 할 수 있다. 제3장 話頭禪은 봉암이 선에 관한 제반 서적을 통해 터득한 지식과 자신이 實參實修를 통해 증득한 경험을 바탕으로 선에 대해 재해석한 것이다. 그가 인용하고 있는 대목들을 통해 그가 얼마나 많은 禪書籍을 열람했으며 精通했는가를 알 수 있다. 제4장 禪의 修習은 坐禪儀와 參究의 要諦로 구분되는데, 먼저 ‘좌선의’에서 봉암은 좌선의 자세보다도 참선하는 자의 마음가짐이 더욱 중요하다는 것을 강조하고 있다. 또한 그는 ‘참선의 요체’에서 『博山禪警語』, 『禪關策進』, 『禪家龜鑑』에서 화두 참구에 요긴한 가르침을 뽑아 소개하면서 선의 진정한 의미는 實參實修에 있음을 다시 한 번 더 강조하고 있다. 이를 통해 그가 얼마나 투철한 禪修行者였는가를 알 수 있다.
