Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), a protagonist of the First Great Awakening, is regarded also as one of the most influential Puritan preachers. He has left over 1,200 sermons, of which the basic structure is a three-division/stage one, Text-Doctrine-Application. In this paper, I have three objectives: (1) I examine the sermon structures of William Perkins (1558-1602), William Ames (1576-1633), and John Wilkins (1614-1672) and compare them to the sermon structure of Edwards. Edwards follows the traditional structure of sermons, but uses his own unique method. (2) I explore the role of each stage in Edwards’ sermon structure by analyzing his thirteen sermons. At Text stage, the subject of biblical text is confirmed. At Doctrine stage, the subject is developed. At Application stage, application of the subject is presented. (3) I investigate the components of each division in Edwards’ sermon structure by analyzing his sermons. There are three processes in the Text, four types in the Doctrine, and two types in the Application. Edwards freely combines several components to write a variety of sermons. Therefore, his sermon structure is very comprehensive and dynamic.

제1차 대각성 운동의 주역이었던 Jonathan Edwards(1703-1758) 는 가장 영향력 있는 청교도 설교자이기도 하다. 그가 남긴 1,200여 편 설교문의 기본 구조는 거의 본문(Text)-교리(Doctrine)-적용 (Application)이라는 세 부분/단계로 이루어져 있다. 이 논문의 목표는 세 가지이다. (1) William Perkins(1558-1602), William Ames (1576-1633), John Wilkins (1614-1672)의 설교문 구조를 살펴보고 Edwards의 설교문 구조와 비교한다. Edwards는 전통적인 설교의 기본 구조를 따르지만, 자신의 독특한 방식을 만들어 사용한다. (2) Edwards 의 설교문 구조에서 드러난 각 단계의 역할을 논한다. 본문 단계에서는 성경 본문의 주제를 확정하고, 교리 단계에서는 확정된 주제를 전개하 고, 적용 단계에서는 주제에 대한 적용을 제시한다. (3) Edwards의 설교 문 구조에 나타난 각 단계의 구성요소들을 살펴본다. 본문 단계에서는 세 가지 과정이 있고, 교리 단계에서는 네 가지 종류가 있고, 적용 단계 에서는 크게 두 종류가 있다. Edwards는 여러 구성요소를 자유자재로 서로 결합하여 다양한 설교문을 작성한다. 그러므로 그의 설교문의 구조 는 매우 포괄적이고 역동적이다.
