Based on the Contingency Theory of Accommodation, this study examined how the residents in Pusan, Ulsan, and Kyungnam perceive the issue of nuclear energy. Specifically, the independent variables were a series of contingency factors, the levels of knowledge and issue involvement in nuclear power, media use, attitudes toward the current government’s energy policy, and socio-demographic variables. Dependent variables were necessity of nuclear energy (RQ1) and acceptance of nuclear energy (RQ2). The results show that the diverse contingency variables (KHNP’s organizational characteristics, status of nuclear power industry, political/social/international environment, risk perceptions, the power of residents), attitudes toward the government’s energy policy, gender, political tendency, ownership of real estates significantly influenced the necessity of nuclear energy (RQ1). As for the acceptance of nuclear energy, KHNP’s organizational characteristics, status of nuclear industry, environmental support, gender, education, issue involvement, and the necessity of nuclear energy were significant independent variables (RQ2). Based on the results, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

이 연구는 정황적 수용이론을 바탕으로 원자력 발전에 대한 부산·울산·경남 주민들의 인식을 조사하였다. 정황적 수용이론의 주요 변인들과 원자력 발전 지식과 관여도, 원자 력 발전 관련 미디어 이용정도와 정부의 에너지정책에 대한 태도, 그리고 인구사회통계학 적 변인들이, 원자력 발전소를 지근거리에 두고 있는 부울경 주민들의 원자력 발전 필요 성(연구문제 1)과 수용성(연구문제 2) 인식에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 조사하였다. 분석 결 과, 한수원 조직의 경영적 특성과 원자력 업계 현황, 정치·사회·국제적 환경, 북한 핵과 원자력발전에 대한 위협, 부울경 주민의 힘 등 다양한 정황 변인들에 대한 인식과, 현 정부 의 에너지정책에 대한 태도, 성별, 정치성향, 원전지역 부동산 소유 등의 변인이 응답자의 원자력발전 필요성에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤다. 원자력발전의 수용성에 대해서는, 한수원 조직의 경영 특성과 업계 현황, 원자력에 대한 환경적지지 등 정황 변인들과, 성별, 학력, 원자력 발전에 대한 관여도, 마지막으로 원자력발전의 필요성 인식이 주요한 독립변인으 로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 다양한 이론적·실무적 함의를 토론하였다.
