The status and treatment of professors in charge of general education are low and poor reality compared to the importance of general education. In this study, I surveyed professors who are responsible for general education at 27 universities across the country and analyzed 17 detail items such as basic information, treatment, lecture and research conditions, and other items. Based on the results of the survey, this paper analyzed the present condition of the curriculum for general education and suggested the improvement direction. The main results of the survey show that the status of professors in charge of general education is about 92 percent of non-tenure track. In relation to treatment, about 66.6 percent of universities earn less than 40 million won per year. This situation is not different for large and medium sized universities in Seoul, as well as those in other province. In addition, the professors in charge of general education have rarely become the subject of decision on general education. Also, problems regarding treatment and status are found in research conditions and various categories(see the result of each item in the text of the paper). As a result, this situation is likely to weaken the position of the professors in charge of general education and ultimately cause fundamental problems such as the direction and quality of general education at universities. Therefore, the fundamental improvement in the Education Ministry’s approval rate for nontenure track professors should be made. In addition, there should be a positive role of Korea National Institute for General Education and a change of perception of school authorities. Above all, it is necessary to communicate with and continuously resolve issues with each school members. In this paper, it is meaningful that the actual treatment and status of professors in charge of general education are investigated and the results are made public in the field of learning through empirical data.

교양교육 전담교수들의 위상 및 처우는 교양교육의 중요성에 비하여 상대적으로 낮고 열악한 현실이다. 이에 전국 27개 대학교 교양교육을 전담하는 교수들을 대상으로, ‘기본정보, 처우, 강 의 및 연구여건, 기타 항목과 17개 세부항목으로 설문조사하였다. 본 논문은 조사 결과를 토대 로 교양교육 전담교수의 현황을 분석하고, 그에 대한 개선방향을 제시하였다. 설문의 주요 결과를 살펴보면, 교양교육을 담당하는 교원들의 지위는 비정년트랙이 약 92% 이다. 처우와 관련, 연봉이 4천 이하인 대학이 약 66.6%이다. 이러한 현황은 서울의 대형대학 을 비롯하여 지방의 중대형 대학도 다르지 않았다. 또 보직을 맡아 교양교육에 대한 결정 주체 가 되는 일은 거의 전무하였다. 이밖에도 연구 여건 및 여러 항목에서 그 처우와 위상에 문제점 이 실증적(각 항목에 대한 결과 수치는 논문의 본문 참고)으로 드러났다. 이러한 현황은 결과적으로 교 원의 직위를 약화시키고 궁극적으로 대학 교양교육의 방향성, 질과 같은 근본적인 문제를 야기 할 가능성이 농후하다. 따라서 이에 대한 개선 방향으로, 교육부의 비정년트랙 교원 인정률에 대한 근본적인 제도 개 선이 선행되어야 한다. 또한 한국교양기초교육원의 적극적인 역할과 학교 당국의 인식 변화가 있 어야 한다. 무엇보다도 각 학내 구성원들과의 적극적인 소통 및 문제인식을 갖고 지속적으로 해결 하기 위한 노력이 필요하다. 본 논문은 교양교육을 담당하는 교원들의 실질적인 처우 및 현황을 조사, 그 결과를 실증적 자료를 통해 최초로 학문의 장에서 공론화하였다는 점에 의의가 있다.
